Arrow Blu-Ray Q1 sales take off

According to new research conducted by Adams Media Research, Blu-ray sales during the first quarter of the year were approximately 9 Million units, double what they were during the same period last year. The huge increase in sales can most likely be attributed to an explosion in Blu-ray enable homes, which are now estimated to be 10.5 Million.

More importantly, of the 10.5 Million US homes that have a Blu-ray player, nearly 75% (7-8 Million) own stand-alone Blu-ray players, around twice as many as the same time last year. The correlation is obvious - twice as many Blu-ray players equals twice as many Blu-ray sales.

Andy Parsons, U.S. Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotions Committee and Senior VP of Product Planning at Pioneer Home Entertainment, commented, "We are delighted to see continuing, significant growth of the Blu-ray Disc format in the midst of one of the worst economic downturns in recent memory. I think the numbers are a clear indicator that consumers really do understand the value of packaged media, and that even when times are very tough, [consumers] continue to seek out and enjoy the best possible high-definition content."
Looks good to me, hopefully the numbers will continue to soar.

If 9 Million units were sold in the first quarter of this year how can there be only 10.5 Million units in homes. That means all of last year ony 1.5 Million units were sold all year. Get back to us with real numbers.

The article is talking about sales of Blu-ray discs, not players.

Why does it say units if they mean disc. And if that is the case 10.5 million homes have Blu-Ray players so over 3 months only 9 million disc sold. So every person who owns a player just bought 1 disc in a 3 month period that would be 10.5 million disc and only 9 million sold that is less than 1 disc per person. Blu Ray will never survive with numbers like that.

The blame for what. 9 million disc sold in 3 months is not a good number. With over 10 Million players in homes. The amount of disc sold should be closer to 25 million in 3 months.

I agree that it wasn't very clear, but if you check out the original article you can see they specifically state the numbers are about discs.

It could have been a lot more if there wasn't such poor titles in Feb and 1st half of March. Compared to last year there were much better titles to choose from in the 1st qtr.

I think the real test will be in the 4th qtr, I'm really expecting some big numbers if the economy starts to recover. With the big hits of Transformers 2, Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator, Harry Potter, and maybe even G.I. Joe.....it'll be really intresting what kind of records they can set in the 4th qtr.

I can't name one title I would buy in the first 3 months of this year, that is mainly the issue. Wait until the 4th qtr if want to see numbers like that.

They dont count movie sales of new movies only that came out in the first 3 months. They count sales of all Blu-Ray movies that are available for sale. So if Wall-e sold 5,000 copies the week 3/21/09 to 3/28/09 those sales dont count because movie came out last year. So out of close to 3,000 movies avalible on Blu-Ray you have not been intersested in one title (even movies released in previous years). Even with the lowering of pricing.

Thumbs up

I don't see it. Costco appears to be having less blu-rays in their stores. Major new releases will have tons of dvds on the first day with no blu-ray copies until a few days or a week later.

Lilo and Stitch big wave edition and Secrets Of The Furious Fiveavailable only on dvd. South Pacific, a great movie, released on Blu-ray yet I can't find it at Costco, Best Buy, or Borders. Have to order it if I want to buy it at full price.

Walmart, Target, and Best Buy blu-ray sections expanded at first but now seem to have settled on small display areas compared to dvd.

Best Buy and Costco have excellent dvd movies for $5. Is it worth upgrading to Blu-ray for a price of $20 to $30?

Just watched the Star Wars series on dvd using a Kuro Elite and a blu-ray player that upconverted the dvd to 1080p. The picture quality was excellent. I see a minimal improvement with blu-ray but at a substantial price difference.

Blu-ray better lower the disc prices soon. When I go into Target all I see is blu-ray movies displayed at $30 prices with a few select titles on sale.

Laser discs were so much more fun. Although the movies were up to $40, there was a huge quality difference over VHS tapes. You felt like you were getting something special. Now, a well mastered dvd is good enough for most people.

Blu-ray movies need to come down in price significantly. Period.

Regardless of the inconsistency in the numbers, I am glad to see that Blu-ray is starting to take off. Awesome!

Wow first of all if you think most blu-rays are $30, you're not looking hard enough. Second of all you cannot get 1080p from a DVD, it's like trying to squeeze blood out of a stone. DVD is 480i and will always be 480i, it's simply not HD.

Take a look at DVD players. If you look on The Digital Bits website the last reported amount of DVD players sold to day was 133,443,356 and the last reporting date of 08/24/07. If you take that into consideration you would think that DVD sales are pitifully poor. You also have to take into consideration that some people may own more than one player. (My house has 3 PS3s and a Blu-ray capable computer) Normal people aren't going to buy a disc for each player... Plus, some of those players may not be functional any longer, some may have broken or some owners may have upgraded to a new player. There is no way for them to take into consideration the players that are no longer used. There are also a lot of people who rent.

I also have 3 players in my house. The statement says 10.5 Million homes have Blu-Ray players. It does not say 10.5 Million players have been sold. Since I have 3 players that means I have 3 homes. Wow I didn't realize I was so rich. If 25% of homes had more than one player that would put the amount of units at 13 million which is a nice number. But if I had to guess between stand alone players, Ps'3 and computors with players I would thing 15 Million units would be closer to how many players are out there.
