Default HD-DVD back up at DVD Empire.

It is like a ping pong match, but by next week BR will be back up with Bond.

And with that DVD Empire looses all credibility.

This most likely due to the 50% sale Amazon is having on BD titles. It has drawn a lot of attention from all over the internet.

Even with all that pull to Amazon, the DVD Empire numbers this week are not at 30%. That is pretty amazing. I would have expected this week's numbers to be much lower for BD on DVD Empire. There are a lot of Blu-ray player owners out there!

So Blu-ray is up every single week this year so far except last week when they did not have a single release (the only week in which the have not scheduled any releases). Oh and this week begins a 3 months campaign of great releases being lead off by the #1 HD release so far. Not really much a match at all if you ask me.

Agreed. The Blu-ray and HD DVD communities are incredibly small relative to DVD, and so the Amazon sale is going to have a massive effect on the sales elsewhere.

Pretty much every one of those 47 titles on sale at Amazon won't be sold by DVD Empire for the next few weeks, except to people who are asleep at the switch. That's about 25% of the BD discs available. And there a lot of good titles, many of which appeared in the top 10 or 20. It's not just old crap.

If it's the sale why isn't Blu-ray at 60% and HD-DVD at 40%?

I know they sold a hell of a lot more Blu-ray movies than they sold HD-DVDs.

Or is this another sale?

Because the sale is at Amazon and those statistics are from DVDEmpire. Amazon's sale is taking away all of DVDEmpire's Blu-ray business right now because of the sale. Since their figures do not represent the market wide ratio, but rather only sales on their site the figures come out looking like that.

Four discs came out for BR during that time frame-Bullitt, The Getaway, Nine Inch Nails Live: Beside You in Time and Stranger Than Fiction, only the ones in bold came out on HD DVD

But this data is from Feb.28 to March 6, Amazon sale started on the 6th I believe, so it would not effect the sales data that much as far as DVDEmpire goes.

bruce, current week of DVDEmpire is from Mar.6 to Mar.12 (virtually Mar.6 and Mar.7), not from Feb.28 to March 6. Next update of this week sales will be done around next monday.

Correct 56, so Bruce the current sales figures would be representative of Tuesday March 6th, in which there were no releases for Blu-ray. Bullitt, The Getaway, Nine Inch Nails, and Stranger Than Fiction would be included in the Feb. 27th Sales Week figures.

It does seem that many people are under the impression the DVD Empire wars charts are showing something beyond DVD Empire sales.

I would have thought it was obvious these measure sales numbers available to DVD Empire, i.e. their own.

Isn't it actually amazing that 40% of HD discs sales at DVD Empire this week are Blu-ray DESPITE the big sale at Amazon?

The sale has absolutely obliterated HD DVD comparatively on Amazon.

Default HD-DVD outsells Blu-Ray for the week ending 6th March

Does anyone have any opinions or insight into the sudden change of sales figures this week between BD and HD-DVD?

This link shows that HD-DVD has outsold Blu-Ray by 2:1 this week.

I still hold to the view that Blu-Ray is the better technology, but sales are sales....

Nothing to do with the truth!

Everyone is buying all online movies from Amazon because they are 50% off!

See here:

Blu-ray outsells HD DVD 10:1 here

This was addressed in an earlier link and that is not the week ending March 6 from what I read. March 6 is the starting point from what I've read on that site. That is the beginning of Amazon's BD sale. Take a look at those numbers.

I still haven't been able to buy Departed or Bullitt locally - not a single store in Toronto has received a single copy of either to this day so I haven't been buying myself for the last week... I've been grabbing about 4 titles per week up until now. Certainly not saying my not buying is what did it but it does all add up. Goddamn Warner Bros.

I hadn't even heard of that online store before visiting this forum so I can't imagine they're all that popular compared to Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy etc.

Like others have said, those are from one store (DVD Empire), during the 50% off sale at Amazon. It's a sure thing that actual sales for all Blu-ray shot way up this week. Also, the sales aren't "2 to 1". It's ~60% to ~40%. so it's more like 1.5 to 1.

Default a product of the void

could it be that the gap in new releases has something to do with this? as far as I knew there are 2 weeks where there are no new BD releases, ending the 13th when casino royal and mr. and mrs. smith come out. i'm getting both of those, plus several from the amazon sale.

60/40 isn't 2:1 (twice the sales), it is 3:2 (50% more).

It seems a lot of people are under the impression DVD Empire is providing industry statistics, instead of just their own.

Amazon has a sale on. How surprising is it that a competitor will lose sales because of this?

Gary
