Default Don't know much about audio, what do I need to do?

I'm honestly an idiot when it comes to audio...I'm getting into my first bit of surround sound now that I'm moving into a bigger space for the first time.

This is what I'm planning on getting: Onkyo 7.1 HTIB

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S9100...194593&sr=8-31

Seems like the best HTIB to me...and yes, I am pretty set on a HTIB, so don't tell me I can get separate speakers for better, I know you will all try!

Basically, I will have ATT Uverse HD, a PS3, a 360 for HDMI. What exactly do I do to get those connected to surround sound? I've never understood it, and it's probably the simplest thing. Do I connect the HDMI's from those systems to the receiver, and then the receiver to the tv?? Help me out, I'm pretty lost. Do i need to keep anything else in mind? I truly have never had speakers other than my bravia's speakers!

Thanks!!

But you could get better with separates...

Seriously though, just hook them all up via HDMI. Make sure they're all set to pass the audio through HDMI and not optical or something else. When you watch a movie, play a game, or watch TV you'll need to set your receiver to "listen" to the correct HDMI port, and that's really it. And yes, they'll all go to the receiver, then the receiver's out via HDMI to the TV.

I think for the price you might be able to put something together with a little better fronts but for the most part that is a pretty solid package IMO. I think it's a good choice for the money you're planning on spending and hope it works out well for you. It was on accessories4less for $750 but it's sold out now and don't know if they'll be restocking it or not. You may shoot them an email and see if they know if they'll have anymore.

As far as hook ups, Aramis pretty much covered it. Run them all via HDMI and set up accordingly. Have fun!

Okay, so I do have to set my receiver to a specific HDMI then, I wasn't sure how that all worked.

When it comes to the systems, will I have to set the PS3, 360, U-Verse to pass the audio through HDMI like you say, or are they already set to that? I've never really messed around with settings like that

Depends. I know on the PS3 you can choose to send it out via optical or HDMI, so you'll need to set that. My 360 is an old pre-HDMI but I imagine there will be a setting in the audio settings. Same goes for your cable box.

I have the older version of that exact same Onkyo package (no HDMI ) and I was very impressed with it. February 2008 is when I first got that in for $740 (on sale), and I'm still using most of it today!

It was my first jump into surround sound and it was an excellent starting point. I think you've selected a very solid first set of speakers, sub, and AVR! The 'bug' will eventually get the better of you though, and I lasted about a year before I decided to start upgrading - and to this day I've only upgraded the speaker wire and front left and right. At the very least, this package will keep you satisfied at the status quo until a change is really needed/desired.

Ask if you have any questions regarding it.

According to your Avatar, everyone else sucks, except me.

Did you make a decision about your center channel speaker?

c'mon guy you gotta explore and test the waters then going the simplest way your first time around to the home theater world.

as Drew664 stated,he had his home theater in a box and left it 1 year later..but it's okay if its fine with you, there's some Interesting things people have done here on the Blu-ray forum & have started Buying there front speakers, then save & get there center speaker next....then the surrounds,sub....that'd be a nice experience piece by piece, you would value it more with the sweet work of your labor.

it's all up to you

Blu World.
