What is the deal with this thing selling so well? Is this legitimate? It's #4 on the top seller list for all of Amazon right now. That's insane. Are people buying this by mistake? Anybody know what's up?

I think, perhaps it's because of: 1) Amazon has the cheapest price for this title (and might explain why the B&M figures for the hd-dud PE sales aren't nearly as good). 2) There's nothing else out there. Of course, this is somewhat negated by the fact that The Matrix was just released, with one set around the same price as PE, and it didn't sell anywhere close to the numbers of PE and dropped off the charts after a short lived spike. So I guess I'm back to... "what is going on?" |

Exactly - are HD-DUD owners tiling their kitchens with the spare discs?

The wierd thing is it is ahead of all the following DVDs:
Grey's Anatomy - Season Three Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (Widescreen Edition) Heroes - Season 1 Pan's Labyrinth (New Line Two-Disc Platinum Series) Letters from Iwo Jima (Two-Disc Special Edition) Yet, it was #8 on the HD disc list according to the last Nielsen numbers. Apocalypto on BD was WAY ahead. ![]() ![]() Clearly it comes from more than raw sales/pre-orders. Which means it could be being manipulated. Gary |

PE sales on HD DVD are a fraud. Fact is Planet Earth is selling better on Blu-ray at DVD Empire and Deep Discount. Amazon is the only site that has HD DVD ahead. Somone is fooling the public by padding the PE numbers on HD DVD. I suspect either by ordering discs then returning them, or a dropshipper is staging phantom sales with assistance of the likes of Toshiba or Microsoft.

I don't even worry anymore....
I know these numbers are not legit because even the Matrix isn't doing that well for them.... so I know it's crap and even if it were true....it would be something of a moral victory for their disappointment that they call a format... |

Maybe every HD DVD owner has to buy multiple sets in order to get a full set that survived the boiling process?

I've wondering that myself.
I looked at the Blu-ray chart and it shows Planet Earth as there Number one selling Blu-ray. Second and Third goes to the POTC. I'm not sure why Planet Earth is still number 1 for both HDDVD and Blu-ray at amazon. |

I don't pay attention to this kinds of information, its manutia in the grand scheme of things. Perhaps this is just were HD DVD guys get their software, and blu-ray folks get their from everywhere. Everything to me is not some sort of conspiracy to undermine Blu-ray.

I agree partially w/ Sir Terrence. Also, at BBuy this title is about $80-90, and only $66.95 on Amazon. That alone explains why it's so high on both formats. As for it being higher on HDDVD, there can be many reasons. HMM noted that it could be due to the dearth of titles available for HDDVD. Yes, The Matrix is out, but that's a re-issue of that title, albeit in a different format. PE is a new release that nobody could get on regular DVD prior to its release in either HD format.

Like everyone I have been curious about this myself. I think something is up.
Not only on the HD-DVD side, but the Blu-Ray side as well. Who the hell would buy PE over POTC? PE has been the best seller for BOTH formats for a long as* time now. Especially on HD-DVD. I know if I just bought an HD player - PE would be on my list but not at the TOP of my list. Something fishy is going on. |

Difference is when Casino Royale was #1, it was #1 everywhere, Amazon, DVD Empire, Deep Discount, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.
It's impossible for PE to be ranked so differently at various sites unless there is some sort of artificial demand at one of them. PE should be ranked tops everywhere if its really selling all that well. PE on Blu-ray is ranked #12 on DVD Empires All Time Best Seller List. http://www.dvdempire.com/exec/v2_cat...order=1&sort=3 But PE on HD DVD is ranked #64??? http://www.dvdempire.com/exec/v2_cat...order=1&page=3 I don't buy into the theory that HD DVD PE buyers are buying twice the amount, and only from Amazon. Yes, why doesn't somebody just look up the name / number for the studio who produces it and call them to ask what the difference in sales are. You don't have to know gross volume of sales (they probably won't tell you that), but I don't see why they wouldn't tell you which format is generating more sales...?

Apocalypto was the #1 DVD sold in the country for the week ending May 27th, according to Nielsen. Yet, somehow, an HD DVD is more popular? Then again, PE DVD is #1 on Amazon, and not even in the top 20 according to Nielsen. Clearly there are some other measurements rather than unit sales that affect the "popularity" ranking.
