Default What will come after Blu-ray?

I was just wondering If anyone had a Idea what would come after Blu-ray? Will we still be using physical discs? Will there be a higher resolution then
1080P? I know I'm crazy for asking this because Blu-ray Is just beginning to become popular, but I've always been Interested how movies would be In the future.

I don't know but I hope it is something material. For some reason there is no pride in having a GB collection.

This is like asking what city will host the 2023 World Series..... just a bunch of speculation and wild guesses at this point.

Take a look at what people thought would be after DVD in 2000...... the answers will probably be similar.

Default my guess

My guess is something downloaded. I expect great advances in downloading speeds over the next decade, making it much more convenient to grab large hi-def files via the internet. It doesn't look too far away before a large % of people will have their TV/Internet intertwined with some kind of interface. It makes sense in the long term, hulu is growing ever more popular and we are just on the cusp of such things.

Not necessarily, i'm sure the situation was that DVD enthusiasts knew about HD just as we know about 2K/4K. (Which i think will be the natural progression). No idea what they'll put it on though....

A good question, which I think goes hand-in-hand with my question, how long will Blu-ray last? Will it be around 5, 10, 20 or more years?

I like keeping one format for each media (e.g. CDs), and don't want to know that they won't be making Blu-rays (which are the first movie format I bought - no DVDs) in a couple of years from now because it has been succeeded by another format.

Well hopefully Blu-ray is the standard for at least 3 more years, Cause were all dead at the end of 2012. So does it really matter?

Gold-ray will replace blu-ray, you heard it here first. /sarcasm
Honestly a LOT of people won't even upgrade to blu-ray because they don't see a need, the human eye can only see so much detail, I doubt a new disc format after blu-ray will be along anytime soon.

Holographic entertainment. Your whole theater room itself becomes the stage.

2018...The next media...

Lucasvision.. He will reveal to the world that Strom Troopers are real and he will unleash them upon all major cities world wide.

He will make us all wear Lucasspecs and have to watch only Lucas Films while drinking Lucascola and eating Lucasdogs all day every day. There will be only one channel on cable called LBC (Lucas Broadcasting Channel). We will all have to name our first born Lucas (Not George).

Then when the world is his and we have all adapted and accepted the Lucas way he will finally release Star Wars on Blu-Ray.

It's going to be long time away. Don't worry about it and enjoy Blu now.

I think this is the correct answer right there. BD has reached a certain limit in terms of quality at home. BD really only has the HD installed base to play with, and 4K would have a smaller audience still unless everyone gets >100" screens to make use of the higher resolution. I think BD 3D is the next step...and then downloads when bandwidth realistically allows it (many, many years from now I would wager).

When they come out with 100"+ tv's that have 2160p resolutions we will see new technology either disks or maybe they will have something other than discs by that time.

My guess is the resolution won't necessarily increase (there's only so much the human eye can discern), but instead we'll get uncompressed 1080p as well as newer and better 3D technologies.

As for the carrier, I think it will be physical.

As for blu-ray, I think it has the potential to have a longer run than DVD ... heck, blu-ray could potentially be the carrier for the next evolution. DVD had a maximum of two layers but blu-ray can potentially have more: 4,8, etc layers. This increases the available space and as such, I believe it at least has a chance of surviving longer than DVD (which by all means and purposes isn't dead yet, by the way).

With advances in Blu-ray discs being made that are increasing storage up to 200 gigs I don't think we'll be moving off of it anytime soon. With the extended storage capacities even the next high resolution formats should be able to fit on Blu-ray discs.
