With advances in Blu-ray discs being made that are increasing storage up to 200 gigs I don't think we'll be moving off of it anytime soon. With the extended storage capacities even the next high resolution formats should be able to fit on Blu-ray discs.

the simple answer is no one knows. Back when DVD came out, it was much easier to know what the future would hold. Companies where working on thinner data layers, they where working on blue lasers, HD was here and audio was way too lossy. Even then except for a new HD format everything else was murky. On the other hand, and this is why I think BD will be around a long time, there is no real research in any tech that appears even remotely feasible, there is no obvious directions for benefits that would need something better. Obviously you could say lossless video but that would need a hell of a lot more from the format and a bit less lossy is not a selling point, you could say real 3d but BD can handle it so why a new format, you could say higher resolution but how long before enough people have such SHD TVs....

As for DL, I don’t see it happening. It will be many many years before the internet has the BW for DL BD standard and any new standard needs to have advantages (i.e. beyond the previous one) so it would be many many more years after that for DL to be able to offer more then BD (TO the point of making it sellable), my guess studios/CEs will want to give us a reason to upgrade before such time.

Perhaps instead of discs. Something like a memory card. Or a flash drive.

This almost like asking, "what will pc's be like 10 years from now"?

I dont even what to guess at that.

Actually u r near correct only not blu rays. The next phase is called, "Holocron" which is holographic picturing......example. U seen how in the star wars movies they communicate? They bring up this small holographic picture up enveloped in light? That is what it supposed to be next. AT least that is what my old boss that works for microsoft said. He said that is what microsoft has been putting money into undercover. I don't know if it's true or not but he said the technology is already there for it but it cannot be released or it will crash the market and that they will wait 10 years b4 they introduce it. That is what he said. I don't doubt him either as if u were to know this guy, he is a freakin' Tech GEEEEEEKKKKKKKK to the second power. SUPER NERD!! And he is some special something for microsoft. He had told me that there was a magazine article talking about the future products and it was in that as well. Don't remember and would love to ask him except i he booted me from the job LOLOL.

N E 1 heard of this? Blu ray will be around for 10 years at LEAST, the market would not survive with something new, especially since it's not even a main stream item in every house hold like the vcr was or the dvd was. Blu rays will get bigger storage wise and all that but it will be around til it's boring.

I think Solid State discs will be the next thing.

Flash SSD's in the 1TB range (I think 256GB is the largest available right now) for uncompressed audio and video. They will eventually get smaller in size and more in line with the size we are used to with CD/DVD/BD's. Besides, right now, they would probably be about the size of a BD case.

Another option could be Compact Flash cards. They can easily be had at the 32GB size with 64GB and above becoming more common in the future.

LOL I think someone's read Snow Crash and Diamond Age too many times. I actually agree though but this is decades away, probably after everyone on this forum is long dead.

My guess is that we'll be forced to go back to VHS simply because they are more sturdy. I could drop kick a VHS movie, body-slam it, then punch it and it would still play back the movie.

1) chances are that disks will still be mainstream with most of the market even in 10 years

2) if anything will be around for more then 10 years and extremely healthy then calling it almost dead is just nuts. everything will eventually disappear but is that is the definition of almost dead then you and I are almost dead as well and so is a new born that has his whole life in front of him (even if he lives to be 100)

3) Flash will never be a media for sale of content. why
--- a) it is extremely expensive, no one will ever sell 50 cent drives even if we assumed they could be made for the necessary size at that price, that is why you can't buy 8mb cards any more, when the bigger ones become cheap enough the smaller ones get dumped
--- b) the benefit of the disk is that it is replicated, plastic goes in and a working disk comes out, it takes seconds to make a BD, Flash can't be replicated, it needs to be manufactured and then the data needs to be transferred, even if we assume it is extremely fast 50GB (or what ever the size will be) will take minutes per film.
--- c) you talk of 2$ a GB, but for 50GB that would cost 100$ to create the flash + at least an other 20$ for transferring the data (time is money), that brings it to 120$ on the other hand the price is more then 100* too big.
--- d) there is no benefit. Do people say "I hate disks, give me flash"? Do studios say "flash would be better"? Do CEs say "we don't like making disk players we can make some profit off of, we would rather make cheap flash readers that most people get free anyways"? Why would anyone push for a change from disk to flash (unless there is a real change which disk can’t handle)

You both assume flash media will stay exactly the same as the technology advances. The first flash drive I had was as volatile as TNT. The cruzer I use now, heck, I don't even eject it or stop it's service through windows as directed. Had it 8 months and haven't lost a bit of information.

no I just don't assume impossible things will happen. The issue is not that they remain the same but that no one can afford to make cheap flash. Does Intel still make a Pentium chip? does any one still make an 8mb SD card? The answer is no, why tech advanced and those are to old to be profitable. This is what happens, new chip/flash comes out which performs better, it has a premium price, older stuff gets knocked down a peg and the oldest (cheapest) stops getting made. The issue is this. No one will manufacture a flash drive/card that sells for less then 1$, in order for it to be used for packaged movies it needs to be less then that, so that once you add recording, printing (You want to know what movie it is) and packaging it is a reasonable price.

I don't know if one day there will be 20$ 1 TB drives, but that is un interesting, will there ever be .25$ 50GB drives in bulk? then we can talk about a flash distribution system, replacing disks.

I agree as well. I've already got so many movies in both DVD and blu-ray. Some even on VHS still. Need to clear out the way. I think it's safe to say that Blu-ray will be around for a long time. DVD will still be around for at least 5 more years.

I had my thread similar to this shut down...don't know why.

Anyways, there's no doubt in my mind, physical media is almost dead. 1080p will live on, but spinning disks are a waste of time.

Cassette's were replaced by Cds. Cd's are being replaced by data.

Same thing goes for DVD's and BDR. Just a matter of time.

Flash and solid state drives or variations there of are the future. They'll easily handle new media formats.
