The Spirit not working in PS3 - Blu-ray Forum

Just picked up a copy of The Spirit at Walmart, got it home and nothing happens in the PS3. I took it back and got another one, same thing. I just updated to 2.70 and this did not help.

Well that's certainly odd. I'm using firmware 2.70 and my PS3 read The Spirit just fine. Normally I'd just say you had a bad disc, but you've already tried a different one.

Have you tried other BD discs since you had this problem with The Spirit? I figure you either just got really unlucky and got two bad discs in a row, or your PS3's Blu-ray drive might be acting funny.

I received The Spirit via NetFlix today and watched it on my PS3 with no problems. There was one slightly weird thing though. I updated to 2.70 last week and when I put in The Spirit... it said a download was available. This wasn't a normal firmware download and was really quick. No idea what it was... but it was different.

Also... just my opinion... The Spirit isn't a keeper. I'm a HUGE Frank Miller fan and thought this flick, while beautiful, was extremely average and it isn't something I think I'll watch again.

That download it asked for was an update for The Spirit, not a PS3 update. It would have asked for that same update in any BD player you tried it in. Some kind of BD-Live thing I guess.

I think you should consider yourself lucky - your PS3 is trying to protect you

Did you have the movie before release date? If you have bdlive enabled...it might not be able to connect to server on bdlive and stall. Wait it out for sometime...some bdlive stuff takes awhile to load....otherwise disable bd live and see if that works.

Does an icon show up at all or will it just not play?

You beat me to it. Man was I disappointed in this movie. I actually spent all that money to see it at the theater too!

Icon will show up after disabling bd live, but it says "this video cannot be played" when you select it. All other blurays I have tried work fine. One more thing, I dont have it hooked up to internet.

Hook up the PS3 to the internet, and then put the movie in. It may just need that quick update to run.

Actually, my friend got a copy from netflix and it worked fine in his player....after seeing the movie, we REALLY wished it didn't but it did. Ugh!!!

no problems with spirit on my samsung blu-ray but i wished i would have rented it first

I'm having the same problem...my PS3 doesn't acknowledge the disc at all after I load it. It doesn't appear in the Video bar. It's like the disc is invisible to my PS3. Every other BD-Live enabled disc has worked just fine.

It worked fine for me but it took around 4 or 5 minutes for the "checking for updates" message to go away. I initially thought it might be locked up or something but it eventually got past that.

I've also got a PS3. I rented the disc from Blockbuster and had no trouble. I even chose NOT to update, since it was a disc I wasn't planning to keep. For me, it went straight to a small loading icon (shaped like a woman's body) right after I chose not to update and then launched into trailers (which I promptly skipped.)

However, this movie was pretty bad - which I was originally hoping wouldn't be the case. I even got that it was trying to be intentionally humorous, but the jokes fell really flat. I remained nearly bored into a coma from start to finish.
