Question 30 Days of Night Question

Isn't it a "vampire myth" that you have to invite a vampire into your house before he can come in? And isn't it another "vampire myth" that if you kill the head vampire all others turn back into their humanly form? Just wondering cause this is two things this movie lacked.

PLMK (Please Let Me Know)

THANKS

Not all movies follow those rules. This is an entirely different take on the vampire genre. I thought it was refreshing.

Vampire mythology tends to fit the needs of the story. If vampires couldn't enter your home without being invited in 30 Days of Night, everyone would just wait in their homes for the sun to rise. Other "rules" that can go out the window are garlic, crosses, and holy water. Usually the only ones respected are the aversion to sunlight and the stake through the heart.

I think you can take whatever artistic license you want with vampires. The standard vampire cliches have been so overdone that you have to make it different to be interesting anymore. On the show 'Moonlight' on CBS (excellent show) , vampires can walk around in daylight, they just don't like direct sunlight, and cannot have prolonged exposure. They, too can go into any place without invitation.
I tend to think of the invitation thing and the alpha vamp dying things as more of the 'old school' vamp mythos.

I like the movie all though I thought more could be made out of the refreshing idea of "30 days of night."

I can appreciate a horror movie that makes up it's own rules and then sticks to them. For example, vampires in myths usually get burned by a cross. That's kind of silly, I don't mind vamp films that remove that part.

I'm not scrutinizing it I was just simply asking a question. Like I said I enjoyed the film and would recommend it but I honestly thought something more could be made out of the refreshingly new idea of 30 days of night.

Those were two of the rules in The Lost Boys.

Not every movie follows the same rules.

I've only ever heard that idea from the Lost Boys movie. Not sure I'd call that part of Vampire myth.

I hated this film it was so full of holes, and the ending was pathetic. Why couldn't the vamps smell them in the attic? Or under the car? So inconsistent, I was very excited about this film and left the theater very disappointed. But I am sure it looks awesome on Blu-Ray!

Every vampire movie and show creates their own rules. You can really only go with what rules are mentioned in that paticular movie or show.

Nah, it's true that is an old myth in some vampire stories. Stephen King even used it in 'Salem's Lot.

Both TV shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" stuck with many of the old school vampire myths (or clichés, if you must) but because of the way the entire mythology of both series' progressed, deepened and became richer and richer, it never was a detriment and they found ways of still having fun with them.

The biggest difference with the vamps of "30 Days" is that they are not supernatural (in origin or any other way) at all; they are simply feral creatures that have somehow managed to hide from mankind and keep themselves a dirty little secret. The movie is not the first time vampires have been shown in such a non-paranormal-way though, needless to say.

On a side note, the film itself is quite mediocre with a few fine moments sprinkled throughout. A rental, not a purchase.

I thought the film was better than the bad reviews of it I'd read, but it didn't live up to my liking of the graphic novel, which is funny, since both were written by the same guy.

Not exactly true as the film was co-written (or rewritten) by Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson. During all the press junkets and interviews for the film he seemed to be very happy with the end result however so he obviously has a vastly different opinion of the movie than myself and many others.

i too rented this thinking it would translate into a buy, no such luck. just another so so addition to the vampire genre. i had never read the book, i didn't even know there was a book when i was watching it, but the whole time i was thinking this is like a book to movie thing where important development along with other things were left out. sure enough read the back of the case and see "based on a book".

good lookin blu, had some potential, but i don't see myself watching this again.
