I hated this film it was so full of holes, and the ending was pathetic. Why couldn't the vamps smell them in the attic? Or under the car? So inconsistent, I was very excited about this film and left the theater very disappointed. But I am sure it looks awesome on Blu-Ray!

The vampires couldn't smell them in the attic because of two things.
1. The peoples' scents were all over their houses (like when bears smell when they approach another bear's territory.

2. The vampires never got close enough to the attic to smell them intensely enough to smell their blood.

The vampires couldn't smell them under the car because of distance. They were simply not close enough. Plus, they could have been down wind from the closest vampire (the ones that normally would be able to smell you at that distance...assuming they could smell you at that distance from the car).

There you go! Your inconsistencies have been made consistent. Can you enjoy the movie now?

My only problem with the film was that Josh Hartnett survived 29.5 days, then, decides to change himself into a vamp (via injecting himself with the blood of another) an hour or so before the sun rises.
"So what" that the town was burning and his wife was hiding under the truck? The vamps were leaving. They knew that there was an hour or so before the sun came up!! Besides, they don't want to burn themselves.
But no. Josh HAD to change into a vamp to fight the head vamp at the last minute, right before they were all leaving, and right when dawn started showing.
I just wish it ended differently
