If you look at the fine print on the game case or the insert (can't remember which) you'll see that all games are 720p. No 1080p games yet.

It's a pain in the butt, but in order to play it in 1080p, you have to go into the PS3's display settings and deselect 720p before playing games that have a 1080p option.

Other games don't have options above 720p and if you still have 720p deselected, the console will then downscale to 480p. It sucks that Sony hasn't released a patch for this and just scale all games to your desired resolution.

not true

if you want to force 1080p btw, go into display settings and uncheck everything but 1080p

So there are actual 1080p games? I didn't know that, but i'm not a huge game either. I have MLB the show 09 and Little Big Planet and i figured if the tech was available those two big titles would be supporting 1080p, but they're still 720p.

Be warned that some games will actually perform better in 720p.

If the game has a native resolution of 1080p, it will automatically play in 1080p. If the native resolution is not 1080p but is capable of playing it in 1080p, it will stay in it's native resolution of 720p or whatever. The games that are 720p but capable of playing in 1080p are upscaled to 1080p.

Mainly PSN games, but yes. Wipeout HD, GT5 Prologue, anything from Pixeljunk, Super Stardust HD, Disgaea 3... I'm sure there are more, but that's off the top of my head.

I've always hated how you have to keep manually doing this for certain games, because inevitably, there are times I forget to re-check 720p, so I load up a game that doesn't support 1080, and I'm stuck in 480, so I have to quit the game, fix it, and reload the game, and that makes me sad.

How hard would it be to have a setting that says, essentially "always play in 1080p, and if that doesn't work, go to 720p". Or maybe even when loading a game, hold down a button. So if you hold L1 when you hit X to load the game, it will be 720p. Hold R1 for 1080p, etc.

Sod the button pushing, it should either give you an options screen or always play in the best possible resolution. Come on Sony, where's the patch to sort it out.

If you have all your display's supported resolutions ticked then all but a couple of games will default to the ideal output resolution.

Well sometimes people may want to intentionally scale down.

Why can't they have it accessible in the in-game XMB... even if it'd require the game locking up for a few seconds, while it secretly reboots, or something.

I just hate quitting and reloading games. Maybe if some of the games loaded up quicker, instead of taking you through 20 screens of developers/publishers/THX certified/etc., it wouldn't be as bad.

Well I know Ninja Gaiden and Disgaea are not native 1080p but can upscale to 1080p but not sure with MGS4.

On most games, you are less likely to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p especially when most are in the 720p format and those games that list 1080p are actually scaled from 720p (or lower), and realistically I doubt you can tell the difference of 720p and 1080p on those small LCD screens (I'm saying this because alot of gamers have small screen sizes), the only reason a gamer says they can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p is that on 1080p displays, the 720p signal likely presents overscan, and everything appears larger (A desktop setup shows icons smaller from higher the resolution, but shouldn't be true with actual content, but of course there is more detail), the average gamer will find the benefit of high definition not from the higher resolution, but from the saturated colors and define detail. I do find it ironic that black should be better, but older standard definiton CRTs had better Black levels than many fixed pixel displays, including Plasmas, which are technically fixed pixel CRT's, and DLPs though they are great with ANSI contrast.

If you want the benefit of 1080p go for a front projector, period. I made the mistake of getting a rear projection, it is a great TV mind you, but that was when 1080p projectors cost $5000, I wished my dad waited, but it's fine.
