Default The next great director?

Who will follow in the footsteps of the like of;

Capra, Ford, Huston, Eastwood, Scorsese, Kubrick, Spielberg, Cameron, Coppola, Lumet, Hitchcock, Lean and many more who have produced great films that are regarded as classics. Like them or hate them, we can all name at least one great film from each of these directors. (If not, shame on you )

I do not believe that the current crop of directors can or will ever produce a film of the likes of, Godfather, Schindler's List, Taxi Driver, It's a Wonderful Life and 2001.

I know that I have left many directors of the list that many people will regard as great so forgive my over site, but I want to know who you believe will make, or if ever, the classic films for my children?

Well you know know what they might producer later in their careers. Many of them are still in their late 20's or early 30's. A man (or woman) change a lot. What a director wanted to make as movie in his 20's he will not want to do again in his 50's.

Let's not forget that before the mid 80's Spielberg was not known for drama movies, yet before long he did Color Purple. He even said many times that he waited more then 10 years before doing Schindler's List. He felt that he was not ready to do so as a younger man.

I´m not too worried about who´s the next one.

Clint Eastwood keeps making great movies, and he really got into directing a long way into his career. It seems to me that a lot of actors take the same step (making great movies that is).

Every year it seems we are treated to a couple of good movies from up-and-coming directors.

Besides, I still consider guys like Guillermo Del Toro, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson as young guys.

Neil Marshall I can see being good at doing the horrorish genres and he has two movies coming out that aren't horror but look cool. Drive and Centurion.

Uwe Boll.

he's just waaaay ahead of this time, in 200-300 years his genius will be appreciated.

seriously though, with the idiocracy we see taking place everyday our kids might actually look at his movies as "classics" along with Jason Statham movies like the Transporter and Crank.

tastes change over time, for better or worse, and so will what we as a society consider to be "classics".

Spike Jonze

Where the Wild Things Are will be a huge step forward or backward for him depending on how good the film is

And yeah, he's already great, but he's still under 40. Each movie seems completely different from the last, and in that regard he's the closest to Kubrick we've got so far.
Maybe Lars Von Trier?

I have run into young 20 somethings right now who think the first Fast and Furious movie is already a classic.

Orlando, and myself. That also includes all other directors on this website.

Except Sussido, cause he is actually Uwe. He said so.

Get back with them in 15 years and see what they're watching/listening to. It always changes. I liked KISS at one point in my life.

Default Don't forget

Michael Mann, Paul Thomas Anderson
make classics that may not be as recognized now but will influence film schools in the future.

David Fincher, Steven Soderbergh
albeit became commercial are brilliant.

Chris Nolan is carving his name up with the like of these guys as well.

One thing everyone should try and get also is, Spielberg, Scorsese, Lucas, Coppola, they are all from generation when film schools became important and the business isn't like it was back then, now the game has changed. They did have a hand in crafting that, and that can't be realistically reproduced. These days there is a different pool of talent that is immensely larger than a handful of special directors like Spielberg, Scorsese, Lucas, Coppola. One advantage they had was money. They could afford to go to these great schools and create great films.

Now days you have directors that never when to film school or made it through them with minimal tools. Guys like Robert Rodriguez, not in the AFI 100 list but did what others couldn't made a feature film on 7 grand. These guys open doors for others and deserve alot of credit for the contribution to the industry and it's future. It's a different world now and the next big thing will probably someone who make a high end major motion picture with with college film crew. Not a small film that was remade with hollywood money, a full blown feature that rivals hollywood budget with college tools and talent. If Michael Bay can make Transformers and get cheers then I'm waiting for a real wiz kid that can shake the hollywood boots.

Ciao

that a good point but then we should also define "classic" because it may be used a bit too liberally. after all, I consider "ghostbusters" a classic

i'd throw in Arfonsky or Boyle as contenders.

with the internet, we've become so bombarded with information, that a director can't just show something we've seen before, and must now come up with some insane imagery when telling the story. Arfonsky and Boyle have that capability.
