All speakers compatible with audio receivers?

Are all speakers compatible with audio receivers? I have a pair of Logitech X-540 5.1 speakers hooked up to my Playstation 3 using a game-console adapter. I was hoping to buy a cheap audio receiver to see what games and blu-ray movies would sound like with real surround sound as opposed to my current matrix surround sound. I'm really not sure which speakers are compatible with what receivers. Would someone kindly teach me a lesson?

to answer your question, no not all speakers are compatible with all receivers, but it can be for a number of different reasons. Most speakers are compatible with all decent receivers, yours look like PC speakers though i dunno if those will work.

Chances are those speakers will not work with most setups. Check the manual and find out what the resistance or ohm rating is- chances are it's something other than 8ohm.

Most intro-level receivers are compatible with 8ohm speakers. Something other than 8ohm can potentially damage speakers, receiver or both. Higher-end receivers can typically do 6ohm or 4ohm loads without overheating.

Thanks for the responses. I checked online and I think my speakers are 4ohms. I'm not going to take any chances and end up blowing something. Do you guys have any suggestions for a cheap setup to get some decent surround sound for a Playstation 3 (gaming and blu-ray)?
