Default Star Trek 2009 : Review Thread

As always, post your thoughts but put plot spoilers using these [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] tags, mmkay?

This is not your father's/mother's/uncle's Star Trek.

Fantastic fun. Extremely well written and directed, this can be the first blockbuster Star Trek ever. It engages the casual and hard core audiences, with enough introductory exposition as well as well timed release of Trek catchphrases. The cast is excellent, particularly those who have the heavy burden of resurrecting the famous crew on deck. The post-pro crew did very well (seamless and gorgeous VFX, amazingly creative SFX, spot-on editing and wonderful score by Michael Giacchino) but the pre-pro crew can't be ignored for creating a cohesive Trek look. Once you've watched the film, you'll understand why this is not a reboot but a re-imagining.

Running time is 2.06. No coda.

I thought a reboot is a re-imagining.

A final sequence in the film where hints of sequels or additional adventures are made. Rarely are they right before the credit sequence starts (Ironman). Sometimes they are in the middle but most often they are right at the last minute of the reel.

In most cases, this applies where a reboot is a start-over, where you deny storylines that happened before.

But it's Star Trek, sci fi and all that goes with it. They got a clever and fitting reason for the re-imagining.

I thought the coda in movies often reffer to a scene after the credits.

Faud,

Thanks again for the review!!! Was getting pumped up to see this anyways (and I'm not a Trekkie by any stretch) but your review has made this quite possibly an opening weekend view!

Thanks
Jude

got my tickets for the 7pm May 7th IMAX opening

The movie sounds fun, not too sure how I feel about the
[Show spoiler]alternate dimensions with Vulcan and Kirk's father being destroyed in the one shown in the movie
but I'm not going to let that ruin my desire to see it.
