Default I Love The Blu-ray Format, But....

Hi! to all,

As I said I love the Blu-ray format and I'm finally starting to build up a really nice collection of some of my favourite films on Blu-ray, some films I've bought for the first time ever, while other's I've bought to replace/upgrade the DVD version.

But one thing I'd really like to know is why don't more Blu-ray's have all the extra features on the disc upgraded to full HD, I think apart from one or two Blu-ray's that I own nearly all of them have the extra's in standard format which IMO is a real shame.

Is this just down to laziness? or is there another reason for this?

Most of the extras were done in SD not in HD so it would cost too much to upgrade it. It takes time and money so many older movies will not have this option, at least for a long time.

I thought it may come down to the cost, shame though.

The question is then, why not just provide the special features in standard definition with the blu ray? It's better then not having them at all. I'm guessing it comes down to economis and law. But i've just finished my law exams (just a few hours ago) and have no interest in thinking about the possible legal causes and impications, etc. A though of thinking about it is giving me a headache.

I agree its a shame.. I know it doesn't make sense, but I am much more likely to watch extras if they are in HD

There's reasons such as: the content was shot in SD, an in some cases, the studio doesn't have the rights to the extra content anymore.

Of course, if a studio releases a film on Blu-Ray without extras, but the DVD has extras, chances are there will be a double-dip in the future.

All good viable answers but this guy is probably spot-on. I think it's why there are multiple Terminators releases and we keep buying them HAHALOL'erz

The same thing came up with why Terminator:Salvation was cut down for PG-13...so you can have the bare-bones bluray. Next will be the Directors Cut, then the Special Titanium Edition with some extras, and so on and so forth...you get the point.
All the while you keep buying it, they keep making money.

Its not just the SD resolution, many extras were produced before 16:9 televisions and the high-definition format. In fact, a lot of documentaries on Universal's releases were from the laserdisc era.

When the interviews were being filmed, most supplement producers used video not film and the shots were composed for the 1.33:1 aspect ratio.

These could be upconverted to 1080 HD (as was done with Dirty Dancing Blu-ray Disc) but the resulting picture quality is much worse than if it were to be kept in SD.

As long as I get the movie ASAFP I don't care if the extras are SD. Also please don't sign your name or initials when you finish a post. Self importance is annoying. watch...

Eh?

Are you referring to this:

Because I didn't use my initials. Please read the post again because it reads as this:

It sucks but what can you do? Almost all of the blu-ray special features that are ported over from dvd were shot in SD. I just got LOST and everything is in SD...blah blah.

Why even bother typing that? Does it really matter that much to you that he signs his initials?

Anyway to the point.... I'm a such a sucker for the double dip, even when I know it's coming, case in point Quantum of Solace. Knew it didn't have squat for bonus features, knew in a year or so I'd be buying the same movie again, but got it anyway.
Well in my case I just give my parents all the ones I double dip anyway, that way dad can get his Bond on for free.
But it does twinge a bit when you buy a new release and discover it has no features, a sign that the double dip is to come. I'm talking to you No Country for Old Men....
