Default "the Black Bars At The Top And Bottom Of The Screen Are Normal"

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I couldn't find it. I'm putting this in the 'off topic' because it's the irony of it that I'm pointing out.

I just think it's insanely funny that this is now announced on the cases of some movies. Or maybe it always has been and I'm just being a dumbass, in which case, at least I'll give you all a good laugh with my ignorance But I never noticed it until I saw it on the back of The Foot Fist Way.

The thing I'm curious about is: In order for someone to wonder what the black bars are, they would've had to have only ever seen full-screen presentations of movies in home. Now, in order to have only ever seen full-screen presentations of movies, there are two possibilities:
#1 Haven't watched a movie in home since before wide-screen was made available.
#2 Have only ever rented or purchased the full-screen versions of movies.
Possibility #2 also has two possibilities:
#1 This has happened by pure luck. (The odds aren't in favor of this being likely)
#2 They have intentionally rented the full-screen version, and in order to do this they would still have to be aware of the existence of the wide-screen option and would likely know that there are black bars and that is why they choose the full-screen(for personal preference).

So are the people that are currently baffled (or at least have been within the last two-years) by the black bars just new to viewing movies in the home, or have they been renting/buying full-screen consistently by accident?

You know, I always accepted black bars, even before I knew anything. I didn't know it was such a huge phenomenon until I joined this forum and every day there were 50 new people asking what the heck those black bars were on the screens.

So do you think that maybe they had never watched their movies with the lights on until recently?

Have you ever seen a night scene on entry-level/early-model LCDs? You see them.

Do you guys prefer movies to be widescreen with bars or full screen with no bars or it doesn't matter.

I wish all movies could be full-screen.

Screw them both. I'm highly anticipating the use of the new triangular cropping system some directors are playing around with

and...no

black bars are the norm for dvd's/blu's....i used to work @ best buy and set up a display that showed the full screen and widescreen versions of the same movie...it was hilarious when i'd explain that you technically see more of the movie on widescreen and they didn't believe me and then i'd show them how some things were cut off the sides and tops on the full screen version and not the widescreen version.

I had the widescreen versions of Mission: Impossible and Star Wars boxset on VHS.

I've always just accepted the bars.

They probably thought they would not get black bars with their new widescreen TV, only to discover that there are 2 main widescreen formats instead of one (and that old movies and TV shows don't come in widescreen).

Actually, the odds are in favor of this being likely. I was the electronics department manager at Walmart for a couple of years and I set up all the new releases every Tuesday. We probably got two or three times as many copies of full screen movies than we did widescreen for most new releases. And when Disney or Sony (Spider-man 3) would release a movie only in widescreen, people would come in there asking where the full screen version was. I would have to explain to them that the widescreen version is better, but they would get pissed off and walk away without buying any version of the movie. So given the fact that more copies of full screen are out there, there's a good chance that there a lot of people that haven't seen the black bars. Plus, some people see that it says "Full Screen" right there on the front of the DVD cover so they figure that they're getting the "full" picture.
