I haven't been using a mirror in a long time, however I'm thinking of saving up for a DLP projector (Likely Infocus X10 or IN83), and since I need about more than 22 feet to fill my 165 inch (16:9) Draper Luma screen, I only have 23 feet from the end of the room to the projector, considering the size of the projector, I wanted to use the projector to a distance of 24 feet (1 foot from the projector to the mirror then 23 feet from the mirror to the screen), I was curious if there is a degrade in quality if I use a mirror to reflect the image to fill my screen, such as decrease contrast or color shift?

Dear Trogjerk,
I mights haves to check wis my legal representative, also so-called da Cheat. But I'm thinking that by the time this email is over, you're gonna owe me big freakin' cash for the unauthorized use of my untillectual property, Trogdooorrrrr!!! Da Burninatoooorrrrrr!!!! Echoechoechoechoecho.... Whoa! That sounds just like Strong Mad's skull bucket when I whisper evil plans into his ears when he's AH-sleeeeeeep. Very, how you saaayy... 'Grand Canyonesque'. Anyway, no - in Theory - a mirror should not decrapitate your picture in any way shape or form. But in Reality, it does. So - I guess it depends on where you live. Either Theory County, or Reality Heights. There are high quality mirrors that use high quality glass and silvering materials to keep any distortion to a minimum. Mirrors of this monumentally boring technical detail are often used in the eyecare industry to bounce eye charts off of. Lesser quality mirrors may be used to bounce eyeballs off of. Chances are, though - depending on distance from projector (The Displayanatoorrrr!!!) to your screen/wall - there should not be a noticeable drop in clarity off of a mirror of 'not-from-the-dollar-store' quality. Small possibilities exist that a slight drop in clarity of picture could result from pixel shift induced by the glass having distortions or the silvered surface having ripples. Color, contrast, and brightness shouldn't waver once you've candelabra'd da whole whatnot. But to be honest man, anybody that represents themselves to the world using a craptastically drawn cartoon of a dragon with one Man-arm... I dunno bro-man. Me thinks you got some bigger issues. Try eating some cheese... or Velveeta. I repeat that you should go to the two-dollar store or higher for your mirror. If you want a real adventure in watching 'Adventures in Babysitting', try bouncing your pro-ject-shawn off a mirrored Ball. That'll teach you to drink beer when you're not old enough to drink old beer! --------------------------paper------------------------- Last edited by doctorsteve; 06-19-2009 at 06:23 AM. |

A mirror will degrade the Picture quality, and FS mirror will not degrade the picture quality. The difference is a mirror has a on top of the mirror causing a distortion, and FS mirror is the same thing, just without the glass. If you want to now how to cheaply and easily make an fs mirror let me know (i've made several FS mirrors when I use to build projectors). On the plus side, if you do build your own, the best kind of mirror cost is very, very cheap.

Thinking about doing this...... What is the proper procedure for the Projector placement...... mount it in the center of my room (rather than the back wall where it is now) face it away from the screen, towards the mirror....... to reflect back to the screen? And how do I determine the angle of the mirror (if any) and what is the size of the mirror I need...... ???? I'm sure it's dependent on the distance of the projector to the mirror, but I was thinking about mounting the projector 4' from the mirror which would be above the seating position on my rear wall. Anxious to try this. Thanks! |

Also would you be against using vertical shift? It really is a simple matter of having the mirror at the right angle to the screen, and the projector at the right angle to the fs mirror. I generally have only used FS mirrors when I use to diy projectors so this is somewhat new territory for me, but I'll have a think about it and get back to you (though the basics is simple, making it work will not be).
