Default BDP-BX1 & Sony HT-SS2300

Hi all- I just purchased a Sony BDP-BX1 Blu-Ray player and the Sony HT-SS2300 as a home theater system. My understanding is the BX1 is identical to the Sony BDP-S350 player, and that it can decode True-HD via bitstream? Not sure what this means, I guess my question is whether I am hearing True-HD on my HT-SS2300 (Has no True-HD decoder) when I play the True-HD discs on my BX1.

Thanks

if memory serves, the player has a decoder. so youll need to make sure the player is decoding it since your receiver cant. bitstreaming is when the receier decodes it. there should be an option for pcm instead.

The BX1 is nearly but not quite identical to the S350. The S350 can internally decode DD-TrueHD whereas the BX1 cannot. It supports DD-TrueHD and DTS HD MA by bitstreaming via HDMI 1.3 cable to an A/V receiver that can decode DD-TrueHD and DTS-HD MA.

I am not sure the HT-SS2300 can decode DD-TrueHD and DTS-HD MA.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the HT-SS2300 does not decode these formats. According to the BDP-BX1 manual, it says that "when receiver does not support HD audio, up to LPCM 7.1ch is output." Is that considered "HD" audio, or is it the same as Dolby Digital?

Yes. Blu-ray discs can have lossless LPCM 5.1 to 7.1 audio tracks. If you connect your player via HDMI, then you will get LPCM up to 7.1 channels. Although lossless LPCM isn't labelled as HD, it is still high definition audio = lossless audio. BD releases having LPCM audio tracks have been dwindling since the studios prefer DD-TrueHD or DTS-HD MA because they take up less disc space than LPCM. There are presently around 260 titles offering LPCM.

Yes, It does decode TrueHD audio this is directly from the Sony website...

Does the Blu-ray Disc® (BD) player support high-definition audio formats?
Solution

The BD player is capable of Dolby Digital® Plus and Dolby® TrueHD decoding. The HDMI® jack outputs bitstream signals from Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, and DTS-HD Master Audio sources.

There seem to be a confusion with the True HD and the Sony BX1. The difference is the S350 can INTERNALLY decode True HD, no receiver needed. The BX1 cannot decode True HD internally, it will only bitstream True HD to a receiver capable of decoding True HD.....Hopefully this will help.

The previous post was taken directly from the Sony website. I, being the proud owner of a BDP-BX1, can attest to the fact that YES it does INTERNALLY decode TrueHD. What it does NOT decode INTERNALLY is DTS HDMA. Maybe that will help clear up some confusion.

I hope that is the case. However, if you click on the product specs for BDP-BX1 on Sony's website, it indicates it only bitstreams the HD audio. Sony seems to be sending mixed signals on this. Is there a way to confirm that the BDP-BX1 is decoding the True-HD?

I also owned the BX1 and I called Sony last week and their Rep. told me this model only Bitstream True HD. Does not decode internally. If you look at the unit right below the Sony logo, it will only say Dolby Digital. The manual also confirm it. If you go to a store where they sell the S350, you can see that it says True HD.

Look on page 64 of the owners manual and it says that all audio formats are output in LPCM except DTS HD and DTS HDMA which are DTS core. In other words, YES it does decode TrueHD but not DTS HD or HDMA. Those are sent out as DTS lossy tracks.

FWIW, Costco has the Sony BDP-S550/HT-SS2300 bundle for only $630.00. The 550 will decode everything and set it via PCM to the receiver.

I just bought one and updated the FW right away. It does internally decode DD true HD. I did not try that before updating the FW so may be the new FW did the trick.

I tried upgrading the FW from a disc and it did not take. I got a system error message. And the FW numbers stayed the same. Is it safe for me to contune using the player? It dose come on and get the home menu.

Have you tried doing it online using the Ethernet port?

I called Sony and they are sending me one of their discs with the correct firmware file. He said it may have corrupted during the download. My machine is actually running good.

OK...got the disc today and it upgraded easy. Alls well!

I love my Sony. Glad I got it and my Sony surround sound!

Default Again!

Ok...I uploaded the new firmware (off a disc from Sony) successfully. Then last night ran Benjimen Buttons and I still had about 4 or 5 freeze moments. Got thru it quickly using the play button. But what is going on? Does anyone else experience this on their Sony? Do certain discs just have this problem?

That is a new release so I am not surpised if you experience problems. If you do some search you will find that this sort of problems are not unique to your player. I hope the Studios get their acts together soon or people like me will give up on the format. DVDs aren't that bad afterall.
