Default Aerial Acoustics Model 9....

Guys,

I am interested in picking up a pair of these used, but am not that familiar with the brand. Does anyone have experiences with these that they can share..? Much appreciated!!!

It's either these or the Talon Raven C's....although the Aerials are a tad out of my range

THX fellas..

Aerial also makes a very good speaker. If you are looking in the price range of the Talons and the Aerial, might I also suggest that you try to audition the Nola speakers if you can find a dealer?

Thanks! It's funny you should mention Nola.....I was looking at a pair on Audiogon ( Viper II's ) for around 2k, but has some scratches on the wood. I'd rather spend a little extra for 10/10 condition...

I will keep Nola strongly in mind if something else pops up...
thx

If you can wait and you can afford it the Nola Viper IIAs pop up on Audiogon for between about $2,300 to $3,500. They have been updated since the IIs came out. They are smaller and not as good as the Nola Viper Reference IIs which list for around $15,000 and pop up on Audiogon for about $7,500 to $8,000.

The Nolas are an open baffle design for the soft dome tweeter and the soft dome midrange. They are an open airy sounding speaker with excellent bass, imaging and soundstaging. They have a long history coming out of the Dahlquist DQ-20 series (after the Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers) and the Alon line. The Dahlquist DQ-20 and most subsequent Dahlquist speakers, the Alon, and the Nola line of speakers were designed by Carl Marchisotto. The Nola Viper IIA speakers have the alnico version of the magnets for the midrange which make them more natural and possibly a little sweeter sounding than the standard magnets.

I have listened to the Nola Viper Reference IIs, the Baby Grands, and the Grand Reference IV.I speakers, but not the more current Viper IIAs. As I recall, I did listen to the older Alon (Nola is Alon backwards) Lotus Elites which were the predecessors of the Nola Viper series.

Check this set of Viper IIAs on Audiogon:

http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls....nt-customer-tr

By the way for speakers on Audiogon, don't expect them to be graded a 10 unless they are basically unused. Expect to find and purchase speakers in an 8 or 9 rating. Ratings on Audiogon are generally conservative.

Rich

Krelldog, I have had alot of experience with the Aerial 9's, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. They are a truly wonderful speaker, they do everything right, very accurate, clean in the upper frequencies, and smooth mid-bass. Very good bottom end, and if they don't include the spike kits, I would recommend getting them, to raise the front of the speakers for the best performance. Michael Kelly, the designer and owner of Aerial is a fantastic designer and also a great person, and a good friend. He makes absolutely wonderful speakers!

Thanks Rich! I appreciate your feedback and will take the Viper IIA's under strong consideration... Looks like a great deal on Audiogon.....It's a half hour from my house so I may take a drive to demo..

Keep ya posted,

Thanks, I was hoping to hear just this! I found a 1 year old mint pair in black on Audiogon, with the spikes, for $4k...

Although out of my initial budget, do you think it is worth it for me to live meagerly for a couple months and save the extra 1k to pick these up? Or should I consider the Talon Raven C's for $3k? Although placing these 3 feet from the wall, as recommended, would be impossible for me.

I'd hope that making the jump from the Paradigm Studio 100's to the Aerial 9's would yield a 100% improvement in performance. I'm not looking to spend all this additional cash to get only 10% better sound.........but something tells me I'd be in for a real treat.

still keeping my options open....thx again for this great feedback!!!!

Krelldog, you can call Aerial and talk to Michael directly for any questions on the 9's, he usually answers the phone most of the time.

If you have questions about the Nola speakers, you can call Nola and speak with Carl Marchisotto directly at: 631-738-2540. I have spoken to Carl several times. When he wasn't in he returned my phone calls.

You would get a vast improvement, the only thing with Aerial is they like power, so if you are using a receiver and not a dedicated amp that can handle the lower impedence, might not be the right choice.

That is good news regarding the power hungry Aerials!...I am using a California Audio Labs amp that delivers 500 watts per channel and weighs in at 130lbs.

I have some pics of it in my gallery....it truly is a BEAST...

Krelldog, have you made a decision on which speakers to purchase? Just curious.

Yes- I think I am going with the Model 9's! I found a pair for a very reasonable price..:-)

The only thing is I can't find a showroom that has them....I would really like to see them in person before I order....

I live near New York City....but so far all the dealers I called have none displayed...

Bri

Bri, that is disappointing that nobody has a pair of 9's on display. I am sure you will be very happy with them. They are not only great performing, but great looking speakers as well! All the best.

I checked the Aerial Website. The only dealer in NY close to NYC is:

Enhanced Home
163 North Main Street
Port Chester
NY 10573
914-560-4706

There are a number in NJ however:

Front Row Residential Entertainment Systems
652 Primrose Lane
Rivervale
NJ 07675
201-391-3022

Home Theaters by Design
415 Route 24
Chester
NJ 07930
908-879-0879

TheaterMax
53 East Parsonage Way
Manalapan
NJ 07726
732-616-1010

Woodbridge Stereo / Video
751 Amboy Avenue
Woodbridge
NJ 07095
732-636-7777

The only store that I have visited was Woodbridge Stereo, but that was quite a number of years ago. They were a large Aerial dealer at the time.

Thanks Rich! Believe it or not I called most of those shops and they did not have any to show. One of the places did have the flagship 20T's

..with the respect these speakers get, I really doubt that I need to see em first!

I am almost sure that he hasn't. I think that these are the ones that he was considering on Audiogon:
