Default How do DVDs look when played on Blu-ray?

I already know Blu-rays upscale DVDs to 1080p, and that the transfer isn't as good as Blu-ray disc itself.

I was just wondering if there was a site that had examples of how a DVD looked upscaled on Blu-ray versus the Blu-ray itself, or if there was a way I could upconvert my DVD on my computer to get a sampling of how it would look.

DVD upconversion is attempting create new data points, i.e. mapping 720x480 dvd res to 1920x1080 blu-ray HD res. Blu-ray is natively 1920x1080, i.e. it has all needed data points directly scanned from the film - no need to create new points like the dvd. So, the difference could be like day and night. DVD cannot even get close to a good quality blu-ray.

If you have a blu-ray player on your PC you can compare DVD and blu-ray easily. The PC will automatically upconvert DVD when full screen mode is used. For a good comparison you should have 1920x1080 monitor.

I may be in the minority here (pretty sure I am) But I prefer to play my Standard DVDs on a dedicated DVD player. I'm not a big fan of the looks of upconverted DVDs.

I do that sometimes. DVD tries so hard to be HD otherwise and it just annoys me because it's not HD.

Unless upconverted you cannot display your DVD on a 1080p display and fill the entire display. Upconversion may be done in the player or in the TV set.

I don't think (don't take that as gospel) that my projector up-converts..... and I'm not interested in "filling the screen"

Okay, that means you watch DVDs window boxed (on a 1080p display)without any upscaling - you are really in the minority.

DVD doesn't try to do anything, the upscaler overfills colors and makes it look worse IMO.

Some DVDs are looking great on Sony KDL-46X2000 when played on BDP-S500 or BDP-S550 (take for instance the Madagascar II or Jumper or KungFu Panda), you realy have the impression is a bluray disc. But the most, are even worse than when they are played with high-end DVD player.

I might be wrong, but I assume the upconversion is being made by the TV itself.

Just my thought

In some combinations, TV upscaling/deinterlacing could be better than DVD player upscaling/deinterlacing. Need to test this for each combination. Also, one should be close enough to appreciate the difference between blu-ray and upscaled DVD. Ideally about 2 to 2.5 screen heights.

I think upscaled DVD looks fine. IMO it resembles the compressed quality of HD you get from satellite or cable service. What I miss when watching DVD's is the lossless audio.

It depends on what the movie is. Some are amazing (LOTR, King Kong) while others are horrible (War of the World remake).

unless when you watch dvds you have black bars above and to the sides of your image you are upscaling, im gussing your projector simply does a 'better' job of it.

I really cannot fully enjoy DVDs since I have seen my first blu-ray. I can tolerate upscaled DVDs and watch it but cannot fully enjoy it.

In the The Upscale Crisis, there is a link showing the 300 Blu-ray vs the one on DVD. And I say, what happened to the snow?

+1
1080p DVD upconversion can get you into trouble with a 720p set that can handshake with a 1080p signal.
