Default 7.1 blu ray disk played as 5.1

I've noticed that the last two disks which claimed 7.1 played on my system as 5.1, with my two back surround disks not turning on. I've checked them and they are functional. I have an RXV 2700, with the first blu player,
BD-S1. I've downloaded the latest codes, and the sound box is definately a 7.1 system.

I understand that my sound box doesn't do high def formats. I had it set to auto sense the format and the movie was pcm 7.1. My sound box showed mpcm when the movie was playing, yet nothing from the back surrounds.

Do you really need high def formats to access a true pcm 7.1?

It all depends. First off, what is the movie and who is the production company? There is a known issue with New Line releases.

Since one of the PS3 firmware updates (after we got the DTS MA update), those New Line titles now do play in 7.1 as advertised. They didn't work at first. But now they do, I have tested them and there's a thread about it around here somewhere. The Condemned, Shoot Em Up, Rush Hour 3 - these and others that did not play 7.1 before do now.

Your player can output 7.1 LPCM via HDMI
Your receiver accepts 8 ch (7+1) LPCM via HDMI

However one thing you should know is that your player doesn't support DTS-HD and DTS-HD MA. Therefore if you try a movie with a DTS-HD 7.1 soundtrack, you will get the 5.1 DTS core.

Therefore you are good to go for soundtracks with 7.1 ch in PCM and Dolby TrueHD.

What is the format of the soundtrack you're trying to play?

Edit: Here is a list of movies that either have a pcm or Dolby TrueHD 7.1 soundtrack (not much 15 movies):

3:10 to Yuma - pcm 7.1
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - pcm 7.1
Daddy's Little Girls - pcm 7.1
Delta Farce - pcm 7.1
Dragon Tiger Gate - pcm 7.1
The Final Countdown - Dolby TrueHD 7.1
Good Luck Chuck - pcm 7.1
National Lampoon's Van Wilder - pcm 7.1
The Nightmare Before Christmas - Dolby TrueHD 7.1
Perhaps Love - Dolby TrueHD 7.1
Protege - pcm 7.1
Ultimate Avengers Collection - pcm 7.1
Waiting - pcm 7.1
War - pcm 7.1
Weeds: Season 2 - pcm 7.1

Yes. Try 3:10 to Yuma (7.1 PCM soundtrack).

I have a question that expands on this one...

While the OP has no HD audio capability and 5.1 speaker set up, I have a friend who is adding HD audio capability but plans to stick with only 5.1.

Will the HD audio formats in 7.1 convert to 5.1 properly or will some data be lost?

It should roll them back in.

If the soundtrack is lossless compressed, it always carries a 5.1 core downmix to ensure compatibility with 5.1 systems. The downmix is made before compression. If it is a PCM soundtrack, the player has to decode all 7.1 channels and cook a downmix on the fly.
