Arrow The "Did I Just Get Scammed On Ebay?" Thread.

Well here we go kids. After decade of buying and selling on eBay without incident, this was bound to happen sooner or later.

I bought a nice Arris cable modem. Seller claimed it was brand new in the box. When I received it, sure as hell looked new and it was sealed. Ends up someone did a pro clean-up job on it.

I called Comcast to register it. They tell me it's still under lease. That is....still under lease to someone who was not the one who sold me it. Clearly fraud. Mother******.

Here's the kicker: The seller sold another 8 of these modems to other people. lol I'm currently in contact with PayPal. 95% chance I'll get a refund. Seller had positive feedback too, with one negative. Oh well, whatever you do don't buy from this seller: auctionfactoryusa

That sucks Mullet! It's bound to happen, but it still doesn't make it any easier to swallow. Luckily you will probably get your money back, but the time wasted is the real bummer.

sorry to hear that Mullet! hopefully you get it all sorted out and you get your money back. and wouldn't it be great if you could see a live video of when police come to their house to question them about it? that would be great.

although if i were you, the fact he was selling 8 would have made me a bit suspicious

It's cool guys. It'll end up in my favor. iam1bearcat, I didn't notice the others until I looked through the seller's completed items today. And me being stupid left positive feedback for the seller before I tried it out. I've never done that before. A huge "duh" moment for me.

I gave the Comcast rep their seller id name and PayPal info, so it's all good. They've already started their own investigation. Usually Comcase customer service is complete garbage, but today was the opposite. The most informative rep I ever dealt with from that company.

I buy and sell a lot of gaming items and have been scammed quite a few times. I think games tend to garner a younger audience which leads to more scamming.

I bought some fake gameboy advance games from ebay last year without knowing it, they were a small surprise gift for my fiancee as she really loves all the old donkey kong and Mario games, she was quite disappointed about them being fakes. The seller didn't even know herself, she bought them off of eBay about a year earlier and didn't know she had been conned. She was very accommodating and gave me a refund straight away. I ended up getting genuine cartridges of the games from other sellers, which took a bit of effort as there are so many fake gameboy advance games on eBay.

How do you mean this? I don't use eBay often, but I'm curious as to what kinds of scams are out there...

OMG, that's messed up.

Yeah, I work for Comcast and if that equipment is under another account then it will NOT register.

I've bought and sold on eBay for many years, and it was only recently I was semi-scammed. I bought a North Face Denali jacket a couple months ago for about half the cost of a new one. I just assumed that without retail mark-up, the price was close to wholesale. Anyway, the jacket came, and it didn't fit the same as the one I tried on at Dick's. Now that my curiosity was raised, I bought the same jacket a Dick's and did a head-to-head comparison. While the eBay jacket was good, it was obviously a knock-off. I immediately contacted the seller with my suspicions and requested a refund. To my surprise, they immediately refunded my $90 without ever getting the jacket back. It's still sitting in a box to return, as I changed my mind about spending my own $$ to mail it back to them. It's been 2-3 months, now, and they've never once contacted me for the jacket. Unfortunately, it's not going to fit me unless I drop 20-30 pounds, as it was very small. Reading-up on North Face clothing sold on eBay, I found that most of it is all knock-off garbage coming from China. Who knew?

sure i know they are fakes, but they look exactly like a $250 jersey except they cost me maybe 40-50 bucks

only thing is i have to request pics of the actual item for anything i buy, as i dont trust the pic that is listed.

LOL. I guess that's why they never pushed me to return the jacket. The way my youngest is growing, he'll be able to wear it next fall.

lol That reminds me how much $$$ I blew on pro jerseys back in the day. Had 3 Roy and 1 Forsberg. You probably didn't buy "fake" ones, they're called replicas. They don't have the fight strap and they're usually a different material compared to the pro ones, but yep they look pretty close to the real ones.....unless like others have posted they had the "made in china" label.

I shipped the modem back today. Let's see what happens.

Yeah well at least you got something out of it , I love ebay and honestly its been great and in 200+ buying experiences I've only ever had one scammer. Some **** sold me a Jay Cutler Auto for an insanely good price, they took my money then closed their paypal account and I never got it (funny thing is this person had like 100% feedback on 600+ sales for years than all of a sudden scammed like 10+ people)

I sold a Cutler auto a few months ago. Buyer's home was in Chicago, but he wanted me ship to his "other" address in which was in a different state. I knew what this meant. lol Sure enough it was sent back to me after no one claimed it after 2 weeks of sitting at the post office. Never heard back from the guy after sending him multiple e-mails offering a refund. People are idiots.

Yep, but at least you can sleep at night knowing you offered... I bought a Colt McCoy for like 60 bucks and never got the card before going on a trip (this was after 4+ weeks of waiting, so the guy refunded me my money. I get back from the trip and the card is on my bed apparently whoever got the mail tossed it aside and it had been here for awhile... I sent the guy his cash back (gotta do the right thing )

It's not something i want to broadcast but i guess it doesn't matter, basically you can buy something on ebay doesn't matter what it is. You get said item in the mail you go to paypal and say it was the wrong item or anything else you want. "PAYPAL" will review your case then say ok if you return the item you will get a refund. So you send back whatever you want. and keep the item you got. And PayPal will favor in your case so you keep the item and you get your money back. This has happend to me TWICE. One person just sent me back a few magazines and another person sent me back his junk mail. I got scammed out of about $150 dollars worth of gaming stuff and the other were some game codes for redeeming a in game item. Never sell codes on ebay, someone can buy them "SAY THEY NEVER USED THEM" and tell ebay they were the wrong codes and just send you back the just voucher while still using the codes... Ebay is a crap shoot...

I actually called the local police dept's and the postoffice in there area and they said there was nothing they could do it's he said she said and the people were simply to far away from me to bother with a $150 dollar item etc...

Wow wtf people are scum. Did you take pictures of the package and items those people sent back to you to show PayPal? That's being scammed on the highest level. Sorry to hear that happened to you.

Some good news: The seller refunded the money for the modem and paid my return shipping cost. I'm glad that's over with.
