Default Anotha Great Film Added To the Viewing Resume........

Men of Honor!!!!! What a brilliant film! I slept on this one and for along time! Excellent movie and I enjoyed every minute of it. Great acting, great story, great ending! Who else likes this film? What are your thoughts of this film? Was this film even nominated for an academy when it came out? I really dont know or remember. I could look it up but I am in awe of how good this movie was! Anyway I am enjoying watching all these films for the first time. I think next up is Rescue Dawn!!!!!!!! Got Em!!

That was a great flick. One of De Niro's better movies in the last 10 years and Cuba's best movie.
Haven't seen Rescue Dawn but heard good things.
Another movie I want to check out is Defiance with Daniel Craig and Liev Scheiber.

I think that it is an excellent film with great performances, that are arguably of Oscar nom quality, by Deniro and Gooding Jr. Another example of a recent Deniro performance to combat the notion that he has "lost it," and another example of the talent of Gooding Jr., if only he would choose better scripts.

The only issue with the film is that it is very "by the numbers." I personally do not mind that it takes few if any risks, because I just think it is a very interesting story and a well-made film. Another small complaint would be the completely unnecessary subplot with Theron.

Rescue Dawn was a bit of a let down imo. I'm a Herzog fan but didn't think it was a great film.

As for Defiance, I was really looking forward to the film because I think Ed Zwick (Glory, Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai) is the best modern war-ish film director. He always seems to pick lesser known topics that at least to me are very interesting. Defiance just fell flat to me. I know the true story well as I read a book about the brothers, but I didn't think the film did a very good job of highlighting how great the story really was.

Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr's scene in the courtroom near the end of the film makes the whole movie worth watching, IMO. Theron is just eye candy, she adds almost nothing to this movie, probably because of her almost cameo role.

One of the girls in it is in the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans and another girl is playing Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Anyone think Burton's lost it??

good film, i've seen it many times. both deniro and gooding jr. are rock solid, what else would they be? its deniro and gooding!

rescue dawn i actually liked, although i know many didn't. i think it will be all about what you expect going in. dont expect a big budget, action-packed war movie. also, dont expect a deep, psychological war movie like apocalypse now. its more psychological than action, but is shot on a few small sets (consistent with the plot). acting was good though, which was the upside.

Gooding is very good and De Niro was at the top of his game. Very compelling story that I can watch again and again.

I didn't like Rescue Dawn AT ALL, as big a Christian Bale fan as I am. But a couple of my friends loved it.

You may end up liking it CZAR.

I hear ya jhiggy, but I want to ask u what do u exactly mean when u talk about films taking risks and what not? If u can give some examples of ones that do and why this one doesnt etc....I heard u talk about that before and was curious of exactly what u meant by that? Got Em!!

I've never understood the overused phrase "Oscar bait." People used it in regards to Changeling, Letters From Iwo Jima, etc. If a movie is good, it's good, irrespective of whether it appears to be a vehicle for Oscar success.

What I mean is that some films take risks (dialogue, special effects, storytelling), whereas other films play it safe. An example of a film that takes a risk both with dialogue and storytelling is Pulp Fiction, although I do not like the film. PF used dialogue in a way that is not common in Hollywood films, and was told in a disjointed, non-linear fashion. That is risky because it is different than what is usually seen in Hollywood. For special effects, the Fountain took a risk by NOT using any special effects, and relying on chemical reactions under a microscope. That film also relied on a very disjointed storytelling method.

Of course, Men of Honor is not about special effects, and not about several different storylines coming together neatly at the end. That is why I think it is unfair to dismiss the film as simply being "by the numbers." The film intended to tell a very specific story, without any flash, and I think it did so successfully.

I have wondered the same thing; otherwise an "OK" movie.

Ok good breakdown. I get what u mean. Yea u do have to consoider each movie for what it is and I believe Men of Honor is exactly what it was. No risk really needed and just well put together with great performances. U already know Tarantino always take risk! lol Got Em!!
