I don't have books to list at the moment, BUT I am interested in this thread, I would like to dive into some good horror books, to change things up a bit. I'll be checking in often.

The Relic series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child are good. Their other books with Special Agent Pendergast are also pretty good too. Might be more along the lines of thrillers though.

1. The Call Of Cthulhu And Other Weird Stories - H.P. Lovecraft
2. The Stand - Stephen King
3. I Am Legend - Richard Matheson
4. Dracula - Bram Stoker
5. The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson
6. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson
7. The Amityville Horror - Jay Anson
8. Swan Song - Robert R. McCammon
9. Relic - Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
10. The Damnation Game - Clive Barker

I only listed one book by each author on my list, when in reality anything by H.P. Lovecraft is good, and also King. I also liked Hell House by Matheson.

When Darkness Falls and Other Stories by Ruskin Bond is a good book to read. It has short stories. If you like reality stories then you may like it.

I've always put Clive Barker's 'The Great and Secret Show' and "The Hellbound Heart' at the top of my list.

Stephen Kings older stuff like 'Carrie,' 'Firestater,' 'Cujo,' and the cool idea of 'The Regulators' and 'Desperation.' Are some of the ones I can re-read again and again.

I thought the 1408 short-story by King was good. Decent movie as well.

In no particular order,

The Rat trilogy - James Herbert
The Beast House Trilogy - Richard Laymon (Best horror writer ever IMO (RIP))
The Totum - David Morrell (REC and Quarantine are based loosely on this)
Misery - Stephen King

Anything by Herbert and Laymon will do the job of giving nightmares.

Not especially horror, but Dean Koontz can scare.

I read a lot of crap when I was in high school, but I did read a few that were really good. I haven't read much of anything lately that I think I would consider the BEST. Much of what I read in HS I cannot even remember or even who wrote them.

Here a few novels which I feel are the best that I have read. They are in no particular order.

The Stand- Stephen King (Pet Sematery, The Shining, It, Carrie, Salem's Lot etc...)
Summer of Night- Dan Simmons (also Carrion Comfort is very good)
Stinger- Robert R McCammon (also Mine, They Thirst, Swan Song, Wolf's Hour)
Necroscope- Brian Lumley (this is an extensive series, I only read the first three)
Dead and Buried- Chealsea Quinn Yarbro
Imagica- Clive Barker (Thief of Always, The Great and Secret Show, The Damnation Game)
Ghost Story- Peter Straub
The Keep- F. Paul Wilson (This is also spawned a series, but I have only read this one and Reborn which was also very good)
Harvest Home- Tom Tryon (The Other)
I Am Legend- Richard Matheson
