Pretty much between Coraline and Up, with no other film having a chance. As popular as Coraline was, I doubt it can overtake Up. Actually, with the travesty that is the Academy's expansion of best picture nominees to 10, it is very possible (almost a certainty) that Up will be nominated. Why? Because it is one of the best reviewed films of the year, made a lot of money, and was popular to people of all ages. The Academy's expansion is directly due to the nominees last year being such that not a single one had made more than $50 mill domestically before the awards (correct me about Benj. Button--I could be wrong on that front).
At the very least, the expansion, as was admitted by an Academy spokesperson, was directly attributable to such critically and commercially successful films as The Dark Knight and Wall-E not being nominated (for the record, they SHOULD NOT have been nominated. They were, imo, the 13th and 14th best films of last year, not including foreign films). So, Up, as a critically and commercially successful film will almost certainly be one of the 10 nominees for best picture, which could take it out of the running for best animated feature, as I do not think there can be "double-dipping" (could be wrong about that but I thought the same was true for best foreign film, when Crouching Tiger was nominated). |

Dark Knight was a very enjoyable flick, but it certainly wasn't the best movie of last year, anyone who thinks so is likely a Heath Ledger convert/fan. Logan |

![]() i loved coraline, will buy Up! tonight and watch it. its very hyped up but i still think it will stand up to the hype, but Coraline will be tough to knock in my opinion. lots of great themes there, a very unconventioal animation, but i've heard UP! is also. |

Jack Black is going to make alot of money this awards season if he keeps up his trend of betting on Pixar.

I liked Heath in that movie. I am not a Heath obsessor though. It was the most enjoyable movie all around last year and that does make it the best. Movies are entertainment so the most entertaining movie of the year was the Dark Knight. That deserved the best picture nod to me.

I cannot wait to see Moon. I agree, not many top-notch films this year. If you want to be entertained, type into google: "2010 oscar predictions." Many sites listed their Oscar predictions for next year after the Oscars this year. Their list of potential best picture nominees is hilarious, most of them include Public Enemies! |

Just so ppl can see my list from last year, so as to criticize if you want, here it is (pasted from a diff thread):
I completely agree. The uproar over Wall-E and The Dark Knight IS why it was changed to 10 films, which is a complete and utter travesty and completely negates the importance of that nomination. The academy is so concerned with getting viewers for the awards ceremony that they decided to extend it to 10 films in order to be able to add films that made a lot of money. I think it is an absolute joke, as is their decision of whether there are songs "worthy" of a nomination. If they deem there are no songs worthy, the category will not be included. This is in direct response to tv ratings as well. I do NOT agree with you that if there were 10 films nominated last year, TDK should have been nominated. The following films should have been nominated ahead of it. Note that I would have included it over Frost/Nixon, but that has to be on the list because it was nominated. 1) Slumdog Millionaire 2) Milk 3) Frost/Nixon 4) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 5) The Reader 6) Changeling 7) Revolutionary Road 8) The Wrestler 9) The Visitor 10) Doubt 11) Gran Torino 12) In Bruges 13) The Dark Knight 14) Wall-E I have seen every single one of these films. The Dark Knight was the 13th best film of last year (not counting foreign) in my opinion. The first five films are listed randomly, since they are the five best picture nominees. Films 6 through 14 were not nominated for best picture, and are ranked in order of my perceived quality (note: this order does NOT reflect how much I liked the films--it is meant to be objective in terms of how good each film was. For instance, I liked The Dark Knight better than Doubt, but thought Doubt was a better all-around film). Changeling was an unfathomable snub to me, with Revolutionary Road being second. I do not think that Frost/Nixon should have been nominated, and would have put it at number 14 on my list, in between The Dark Knight and Wall-E. The Dark Knight had a great performance by Ledger, but had terrible editing and poor screenwriting, with numerous holes (you mean to tell me The Joker just decided to get up and leave the party after Batman went out the window???). It was very entertaining, there is no doubt about that. However, its themes were very cliche and not as profound as ppl think they were. Watch a film like The Visitor. The themes in that film are far more important and far more effective through their subtlety. |

I think you are delusional if you think those are the two "best" films of last year. It is fine to say they are your favorite, but I'm not sure you can say best. However, it is your opinion and as such it should be respected despite its obvious fallacy. |

Ah, well that makes your argument more understandable, as you are basing it on entertainment. In doing so, it is difficult to argue with you, even though I still disagree. That being said, best movie is not about most entertaining. If that was the case, summer blockbusters would be nominated every year. |
