came across this film from 1944 on amazon.de.
"The Fire Tongs Bowl" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Feuerzangenbowle I see that bd.com has it listed, but there appears to be no thread for it. It was released by Kinowelt. Anybody know anything about this film or bd release--like if it possibly has English subs by some miracle. http://www.amazon.de/Die-Feuerzangen...0751554&sr=1-3 Last edited by Arkadin; 04-08-2010 at 06:58 PM. |

I translated a few of the negative ones.
not surprisingly the complaints seem to be about excessive dnr-- it translates as "the image is smoothed out with some digital filters" honestly, I don't put a ton of stock in amazon reviews regarding bds-- there are just too many variables that can influence each person's viewing experience. Hopefully somebody on the forum has maybe picked this up, and can let all on here know what his/her impression is. Also: with some of these older classics on bd I'm usually not nearly as bothered by dnr as some people-- like I am happy with my UK "Zulu" release, which has been panned by many people. Now I'm not saying it couldn't be better, and it possibly did get messed up some, BUT it is still absolutely worth getting, and is light years beyond the blurry as hell mgm dvd. This film could be the same way. Take the recent release of "The Ladykillers". That is another title that, though it has some problems--is still an essential purchase imo. It was praised highly in many of ther reviews I read, and it clearly has a lot to recommend it, BUT it also had a very clear washed out look that it should not have had. the close-ups of the old lady's face were ghastly--almost white. BUT again, the bd is still very much worth getting because overall it shows excellent detail, and destroys any old dvd of the film. btw: one of the positive reviews of this German film said there was film grain present, and that the people claiming "filtering" were wrong. yeah I figured.
![]() from reading that review it sounds like Kinowelt didn't have a clue how to create the best bd with what they had to work with. a real shame. thanks for the info though. Last edited by Arkadin; 04-09-2010 at 12:57 PM. |
