From Clint Eastwood, the legendary director of The Outlaw Josey Wales, Bird, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby and American Sniper, comes this terrifying thriller about psychotic obsession. Eastwood (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) stars as Dave Garver, a popular radio disc jockey who repeatedly receives on-air phone requests from a sexy female fan to “play Misty for me.” When the woman, Evelyn Draper (Jessica Walter, The Group), orchestrates a rendezvous with Dave at his favorite nightspot, the two begin a torrid affair. But when Dave decides to end the relationship, Evelyn’s obsession turns to violence. Soon everything and everyone in Dave’s life becomes a target for Evelyn’s increasingly deadly campaign of terror. Beautifully photographed by Bruce Surtees (Night Moves) on location in Eastwood’s hometown of Carmel, California, Play Misty for Me continues to be considered one of the great modern-day thrillers. Play Misty for Me was Eastwood’s directorial debut, co-written by Jo Heims (Breezy) and Dean Riesner (Charley Varrick) with a strong supporting cast that includes Donna Mills (Superdome), John Larch (Dirty Harry), Jack Ging (High Plains Drifter) and Eastwood’s mentor, filmmaker Don Siegel.

Well, with this one getting a new 2K scan, along with "The Beguiled" and "The Eiger Sanction," I may well be buying all three again! With the latter two, the current Blu-rays are so barebones that these new scans, along with, hopefully, good bonus features, will take the sting out of double-dipping. However, with "Misty," the existing Blu-ray already has many great bonus features... but I do want to see the new scan! Oh, my wallet!

When this was originally announced back in May, it was said to be getting a 4K master instead of 2K. Did the Insider comment anywhere on why that changed?

Asked about this in the KLSC thread too, and this was the Insider’s response. Just reposting it to keep consistency in both threads.

Too bad the movie is ruined by that long jazz sequence, followed by the stupid love scene. Think I'll stick with Fatal Attraction.

Do you mean the scene midway through the film where it become a 3 minute advertisement to showcase San Fran? Cuz I honestly laughed during that scene and figured that since this was Clint's directorial debut, and that he's from San Fran, they told him they'd fund the movie if he made sure to include a scene to showcase the fun of the city in order to bring in tourists, which would bring in the $$$.

you're completely right that these 2 scenes stop the film to a halt....but..... it's STILL such a great film that it overcomes these faults. Fatal Attraction is a terrific thriller... but MISTY is still the better film

There's not a single scene of this film that was shot or takes place in San Francisco. The jazz scene was shot at the Monterey Jazz Festival which is in, well, Monterey.

The leading lady in Misty is much better looking too.

I could be wrong, but I think at least one reason that the long music festival scene is in the movie is that Clint is a very dedicated jazz fan. This part of the film slows things down quite a bit, and it does go on for some time, but I also really like it as a 1971 cultural time capsule of music and fashion. It also helps that I'm a jazz fan too.

I love "Fatal Attraction," and I remember fondly when it was in theaters, whereas with "Misty," I wasn't born at the time of its release, but I do think that, overall, "Misty" is the better film.

Agree, on every point.

I like both but I think Misty is better, and the jazz festival doesn't detract from the film to me. Films are a great time capsule and scenes like this add context and mood.

It is, however, quite a different approach for Eastwood whose later films are characterised by being exceptionally tight and focused when it comes to progressing character and story. Misty definitely feels looser and more free, in a way that it feels more typically 1971 than it does typically Eastwood.

True, but he also plays a deejay in Carmel, which is in Monterey County. It's not entirely out of left field for his character to be spending time at the jazz festival.
