The Fifth Element is already a beautiful film in regards to color and cinematography, but with the possibility of having 1080i resolution this film is bound to be a benchmark test for blu-ray DVD players. One downside though: no extras. That's right. All the cool stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is just like getting the first one they released. You get only the movie. If I were you I would wait until they make some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you get the higher resolution AND the goodies.
No extras... WTF??!! Of course, how we he know? I doubt he has a blu-ray player. I've been wanting this movie for years, so I still plan to get it, but I hope this isn't a trend for BR. Last edited by Dr Kain; 06-14-2006 at 02:09 PM. |

What's the source of that comment? It doesn't surprise me at all that there are no extras and I expect the majority of the initial BDs will be the same due to BD50 not being used yet. Besides this is Sony we're talking about. They have every intention of trying to get customers to double dip even with HD titles. I plan on buying this disc but I would be very disappointed if the movie wasn't in 1080p. I don't think that'll be the case but we'll know soon.

People keep asking how you fit a movie at good bitrate and uncompressed audio and all the extras on a 25GB disc without sacrificing quality...
Now we know the answer - sacrifice content. Personally I think it is the correct answer. Your DVD still has all the content. |

I know there are some people who swear by the special features and extras that are on DVDs, but I know that I am NOT one of those people. I watch the movie, then put it away for a while. No 'extras' almost ever are seen unless the movie was really funny and I've got some time to kill looking at outtakes.
Heck, it's often tough to stay awake through the feature presentation! ![]() |

Like I expected, and both formats are guilty of this...first gen here is being treated like first gen of DVD was. You get a barebones product. You all know as well as I do that a couple of years from now or so...you'll see at least one more pressing of a BR (or whatever final format there is) Fifth Element and the rest of it. These are the kinds of things that contribute to the reasons why I never early adopt. |

However, according to the AVS site, there are some extras on it.

I could care less about the extras i just want steller picture quality and amazing audio and if it delivers that then i'll be happy. If it fails in that regard then i have not interest in the format. I have all the superbit movies for that reason alone. To get the best picture and audio possible. I also like the critereon collection for the same reason.

I hope the quality is better than Superbit because I've yet to see a SB DVD impress me.

I was actually pleasantly surprised at, of all movies, the Labyrinth superbit DVD. There were definite details on that release that I could not make out nearly as easily on the collector's edition DVD (namely the hidden Jareth stones placed around the film).

I'm more concerned about some people writing about how this particular transfer of Fifth Element leaves something to be desired, HD or not.

this is why I'm a big fan of Superbit versions...I own Snatch, Black hawk Down, Spiderman 2 and The One...The One sucked....but the other 3 are great... |
