Germany The Fifth Element

From what I can see there was another release of The Fifth Element in German: Amazon

I haven't been able to find much info on it but it looks like it uses the VC-1 codec? Anyone confirm this?

That doesn't really give you specs as to the codec but it does give you other info such as extras and audio options and region coding (region B), etc.

Yes, it uses the VC - Codec and the transfer is excellent; especially if you compare it to the 1st US Release - a definite improvement.

@ hhhrrrinnn "Does anyone know where I can find a professional review of this Deutch release?"

Although there is no off. review of the disc on this site, there are more than 200 user ratings - and the overall verdict is very positive. I've got the movie myself, a really good transfer - you won't be disappointed

6.1 mix eh?

This sounds like the same source mix as the German DVD, which was a very different and far superior mix to the USA releases and Blu-ray mix.

I think I need to investigate this one further....

I have this in the mail to me, should have it by Friday.

I imported this for the 6.1 track and hoping the video is atleast as good (hopefully even better) than my US copy. I'm looking forward to the comparison. (I have the 2nd US release, BTW. AVC encode.)

meh, waste of money...

Yeah, the audio is DTS-HR 6.1 and a constant 4608Mbps. Very nice track. The video is VC-1, but often noticeably lower bitrate than the US rerelease with AVC. In this case, the bitrate seems to make a slight difference, the US release looks slightly sharper and seems to have less noise and the grain is more refined. I don't care about extras at all, just the movie itself.

Seriously bummed, took a chance and got burned, oh well...

If someone cares about extras and wants this disc, I may decide to let it go. PM me and we can talk about it.

And are these special features playable in U.S. PS3s? In other words, they are not PAL-encoded?

They are in SD, so they have to be PAL encoded, I guess. But you can watch them, I think, since the BD is region free. A US PS3 can play PAL and NTSC if I remember correctly.

I hope this isn't redundant information, but the BD is on sale for $13.77 at Amazon as a gold box deal, the remastered version that gets better reviews than the initial release.

Well, damn, that was a bust. I should have gone with BladeRunner2007's warning, but he seemed gray about NTSC/PAL and how they affect U.S. players, so I went ahead and spent $43 USD to import this from Amazon.de and, though the menus are not PAL, allowing me to play the actual movie without incident, all the copious extras--the reason I went for this release vs. all others--are PAL encoded so I can't view any of them on my PS3. CRAP!!! Is the PS3 the only brand name U.S. BD player that won't handle PAL content???

There is also a Nordic Blu-ray released by Gaumont (a French company). Same screens compared here:

http://www.hd-compare.com/2009/05/fifth-element.html

Definitely a little brighter (maybe more natural) and it looks like its a new master. Definitely worth looking into. Extras listed here

Some are, some are dubbed over.

I just checked mine (not every single one though):
-Making of 23:04 Min. - DUBBED OVER
-Searching of 22:16 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-The Elements 24:48 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-Elementares 25:13 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-Diva Plavalaguna 5:12 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-Design und Look 5:30 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-Stilelemente 5:12 Min. - English w/ German subtitles

Cannes 07.05.1997:
-Featurette 9:11 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-Die Baustelle 3:58 Min. - it seems no one speaks during that one
-Die Pressekonferenz 20:12 Min. - English w/ German subtitles
-Der rote Teppich 1:58 Min. - it seems no one speaks during that one too
-Die Party 19:48 Min. - English w/ German subtitles (Mtv footage, back when they were actually Music Television)

Die Entdeckung
Gesamtlaufzeit 48:20 Min. - English w/ German subtitles

Interviews - English w/ German subtitles

And you can of course disable the subtitles, they are NOT enforced or encoded into the video.

It really is the best release worldwide.
It even at least had a reversible cover to hide that ugly as sin age rating.

Wow, thank you for that thorough breakdown. It looks like only the Making Of is dubbed. Did you happen to check if the German dubbed features have English subs? I kinda doubt they would anyway.

I might pair the SONY 4K re-master with the German release since they seem to have exclusive extras, though it's a little hard to tell because the naming and organization of the features may not match up. Also they have different transfers.

http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=9448

EDIT: The Australian release by Madman has what I imagine is the same Making Of but presumably in English.
