Default The delicate balance of buying Blu-ray discs now

Understanding and accepting that this is a new format, and that due to the 'war' the Blu-ray consortium is in need of pushing titles out as fast as possible, I am still a bit let down at the plain and basic overall packaging of the discs/cases.

I want, and do, support the format with my dollars, but I have yet to see a well designed custom case or method of presentation of a collector's edition release.

Of the movies I purchased on DVD (something like 200+ now), a good portion of them were really well done Collector's Edition cases with enclosed media and intricate artwork throughout.

Examples:
  • Afro Samurai - Multi-fold out jacketed case. Sweet artwork.
  • Broken Saints - Same as above
  • Fight Club - Nice custom mock Parcel case, fold out jacketed case, etc.
  • Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Who doesn't own these?
  • Monty Python Quest for the Holy Grail - Creative case cover with changing (side-side) images
  • Appleseed (Anime) - Extremly nice all metal case covered in sweet, sweet artwork inside and out. All painted on, no shitty paper glued to anything.
  • Terminator 2 - Metal Jacket for case, bunch of goodies inside too, by way of a little book and shit
  • Total Recall - Wicked little all metal case completely round and shaped like the planet Mars. It drops into a cardboard pedestal type thinga-ma-bob to give it a stable spot and normal DVD dimensions.
  • Army of Darkness - Numbered limited edition (1 of 5000)
  • Dune - Same case type as Appleseed

Anyways... if you've seen any of the cases mentioned above or can sort out my rantings, you'll know what I'm talking about.

That said, where's the fancy Blu-ray cases?

That also said, should I/we really be going hard buying up all the movies I/we already own on a fancy DVD, or should I/we wait with the assumption it's only a matter of time before they offer these type of options for Blu-ray.

I really, really, really want to see the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in HD. More so I wish to own it, and to that end I want a sweet set of cases like the DVD ones I have now.

Debate.
