Criterion Slacker (1990)

Slacker Blu-ray

Slacker - United States, 100 minutes, Color, 1.33:1, English, Spine #247, September 17, 2013

Slacker, directed by Richard Linklater, presents a day in the life of a loose-knit Austin, Texas, subculture populated by eccentric and overeducated young people. Shooting on 16 mm for a mere $3,000, writer-producer-director Linklater and his crew of friends threw out any idea of a traditional plot, choosing instead to create a tapestry of over a hundred characters, each as compelling as the last. Slacker is a prescient look at an emerging generation of aggressive nonparticipants, and one of the key films of the American independent film movement of the 1990s.

Disc Features
•New, restored high-definition digital film transfer, supervised by director Richard Linklater and director of photo*graphy Lee Daniel, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
•Three audio commentaries, featuring Linklater and members of the cast and crew
•It’s Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (1988), Linklater’s first full-length feature, with commentary by the director
•Woodshock, a 1985 16 mm short by Linklater and Daniel
•Casting tapes featuring select “auditions” from the more-than-100-member cast
•“The Roadmap,” the working script for Slacker, including fourteen deleted scenes and alternate takes (DVD)
•Deleted scenes and alternate takes (Blu-ray)
•Footage from the Slacker tenth-anniversary reunion
•Early film treatment
•Home movies
•Ten-minute trailer for a 2005 documentary about the landmark Austin café Les Amis
•Original theatrical trailer
•Stills gallery featuring hundreds of rare behind-the-scenes production and publicity photos (DVD only)
•Slacker culture essay by Linklater (DVD only)

Does anyone know why there are numerous DVD only special features? I mean I completely understand having SD features, but just leaving them off the blu-ray entirely... it's bizarre.

I'm assuming there is not enough space, but I guess I'll be keeping this.

Which features are missing on the blu-ray?

Excellent! I was wondering when this would come out. It's on my Netflix queue but never watched it. Looks like I'll be blind buying it instead.

I know they are minor features, it's just weird to me they won't be included. At first I thought this would be a combo pack but that doesn't make sense as I don't think Criterion has ever released such a thing.

I assumed the DVD was also a part of it, but I guess not.
Maybe it has something to do with creative/distribution rights associated with those particular features not being cleared again for blu-ray, so they have to stay on DVD.

It sounds like the deleted scenes/alternate takes will be carried over to the Blu-Ray, but not the whole Roadmap feature (which I've never seen, so I don't know what it is exactly).

My expectations aren't high for the A/V so it's nice to see it's more than satisfactory. Damn, those special features. Can't wait for this.

Still on page 1? I thought this film would have more of a following.

I saw this in one of my college film classes years ago. Most seemed to go crazy over it, but it didn't really resonate with me. I remember a couple of the characters being interesting, but otherwise it just wasn't a movie that I connected with.

Finally got it through BN.COM B2G1F sale. The packaging design is essentially the same as the previous DVD release.

BTW I didn't know this film was included in the 2012 Library of Congress National Film Registry.

I hope this sells well so that, maybe, they could be convinced to release the "Before" trilogy.
