Default "What's Blu-ray?"

I'm kidding you not. I got an email notification that someone replied to a comment I made on the Youtube video of the Dance scene from Ex Machina...in which I said I couldn't wait to own the Blu-Ray...and his response was..."What's Blu-Ray?"

Did you explain to him that it uses blue rays of light, as opposed to the red rays of light used to read DVDs?

What country were they from? I ask because some people in third world countries wouldn't have a clue.

The guy also could have been trolling/trying to be funny (i.e. someone that just streams or illegally downloads 100%).

I hate people like that, they ruin it for everyone else. If they bought a copy, the sales figures would have more numbers, and the studios would see more incentive into giving us good quality releases.

I bought some movies at Target a while back and the cashier asked me "what are these blu rays anyway? Are they just DVDs?" I told him they were HD DVDs basically, they look and sound better. He replied "why would you need a movie to look better than a DVD?"

There's your mass market right there folks.

Unfortunately, that's the way it is, but the studios love us collectors/early adopters, which is why there is such a big push for 4K.

My best friend told me he "didn't care about picture quality" and that a pirated DVD rip was "good enough for him".

I don't know what Blu-Ray is But I do know what Blu-ray is spelled properly

Changing the thread title so it is proper

Make him watch a few VHS tapes, on a large HDTV, then ask him again if picture quality doesn't matter.

I'm not sure what device he made this thread on, but my iPad keeps trying to autocorrect Blu-ray to Blu-Ray, and I always have to go back and fix the "correction" but sometimes don't notice it was autocorrected.

One of the many reasons I use BD, which is the official abbreviation.

I really think the DVD boom was more about special features, no rewinding and chapter stops.

Yeah, that's true to be fair. Probably why most early BDs listed scene selection as a bonus/extra!

The only VHS that I can remember having any extras was Sixth Sense.

The Matrix had extras at the end of the tape. Pretty much all the same ones as the BD. (you'd thing with more space, they could add new ones to the BD, but nooooo)
