Started this thread after having a quick chat online.
A lot of the animated stuff is top notch like Tangled, Christmas carol, HTTYD, Megamind, shrek forever after, coraline, up, toy story 3 etc But following up behind in the live action stakes are films like, resident evil, bloody valentine, clash of titans, green hornet, drive angry, my soul to take, SAW 3D, Jackass 3, G force, Piranha and The Hole. Most of those are really badly scripted, acted or both. The Hole wasn't too bad and resident evil had a few interesting bits but surely 3D is going the way of the dodo if they keep churning out such "get rich quick" ploys. Anybody got a good thing to say about the live action 3d genre? What films did you like and why? |

There was that other one James cameron did... Avatar, I think? (yes I realize there were extensive CG elements to it, but it's still a live action movie).
And Green Hornet was fun on several levels so some of what you are saying is wildly subjective. I also dug Resident Evil, but some of the enjoyment in that was latent from enjoying the series as a whole. Alice in Wonderland made me way more interested in that story than I ever have been before, and was successful critically (mostly). Tron Legacy has it's share of problems, but I thought it worked fine- especially if it is intended as other's have discussed as a bridge film between the original and subsequent films. If you look at the lineup for a year, almost every major movie is coming in 3D. Thor, Captain America, Pirates 4, Green Lantern, Transformers 3, Harry Potter 7.2 (and maybe .1), Priest, Spy Kids 4, Cabin in the Woods, 3 Musketeers, Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers, The Hobbit 1 & 2 ... seems like there isn't a live action movie I'm looking forward to that ISN'T coming out in 3D. It doesn't mean they will be great movies all, but they can't remotely all miss. Last edited by seregloth; 04-21-2011 at 11:37 PM. |

Found the 3d to give a great sense of depth (possibly in some cases too much - divers masks look like they are 2 feet deep in some shots) There's a few times where things dont quite "blend" properly showing up as ghosting. I've watched it in both 2d and 3d....while the 2d version lacks the feel of depth, there are a few areas where detail seems more pronounced... Worth a watch.... NZScreamindemon |

Its sort of a mix. Live capture and some real locations. Some of the characters, at least in the trailer, look to be real. The major characters are animated, but attempted to look real.

These kind of mindless entertaining action films have been around forever and will always be around. Heck many of the summer Blockbuster films like Transformers fall into the same category. 3D gimmicky movies will always have their place. The only way 3D will die is if 3D movie TRANSFERS suffer in quality. If we continue to get movies like RE afterlife, with it's high quality 3D scenes 3D will just grow as opossed to fail. |

How about House of Wax, starring Vincent Price, and Dial M For Murder as bluray 3D releases? In a recent Dick Dinman's DVD Classics Corner radio show interview I heard George Feltenstein (head of Warner Bros. Home Video Marketing) say that they are preparing these two movies for bluray 3D releases probably in late 2012. He also mentioned Kiss Me Kate, which they own as well, although he said nothing about a time frame for that one. In my opinion when they start putting actually good movies like these on bluray 3D the format will begin to grow. And in an earlier interview I heard him say they are working on a bluray release of Cabaret in 2012. The problem with this one has been that it was poorly cared for by the former owners and there is a heavy scratch down the center of the 6th reel which must be painted out, an expensive and time consuming process. I, for one, will be glad to get my hands on any or all of these.

I consider myslef a bit of an aspect ratio snob, and love to see movies how they should be seen .. i.e. in their original aspect ratio. However, 3D blu looks better when seen in full screen, 1.85:1 or so. The 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 works terrific in cinemas, but at home, the black bars spoil the overall 3D effect for me. Cameron got it right with Avatar, that looked gorgeous in the cinema and still does on 3D blu .. cos it is in the best aspect ratio for home viewing. I hope many directors have picked up on this cos the 3D home market could be a better place for it. RE Afterlife could have been fantastic if it was full screen, but I consider it only GOOD because of the reduced effect caused by the aspect ratio. It has also put me off other titles that I am sure could be gems.

[Show spoiler] Wasn't able to watch it in SBS, but even in anaglyph, it looks like some of the best 3D depth to come out of the 50's. ![]() ----- * - (And anyone who can watch SBS clips on their big screen, or can convert to analyph, raise a glass to the unknown 'Tuber known as "Underground3dMovies.com": http://www.youtube.com/user/underground3dmovies#g/u The personal link leads only to a blank page marked "Coming soon" but hasn't been updated in a year--Possibly suggesting some brave soul who was going to bootleg the anaglyph and polarized 50's-80's classics in SBS Sensio. All we have is the previews of what Could Have Been. ![]() Last edited by EricJ; 08-08-2011 at 05:20 PM. |

In fact I have just watched Alice In Wonderland 3D, and despite the positive reviews regarding the 3D conversion, I can say that I was far from overwhelmed! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but for the first time I can say that the poor 3D spoiled it for me. 3D conversion will not do the industry any favours, especially if Alice ... is as good as it gets!

![]() What a relief for us to have an announcement of that magnitude. Now, there's one movie from the 80s that I would like to see make it to 3D blu ray and that's 'Starchaser: The Legend of Orin'(a cartoon that was basically a 'Star Wars' rip-off but a beaut nonetheless). At one point MGM owned the rights(at least in 2D) to it although I don't know about now(some time back Warners released a number of MGM movies onto DVD so maybe they now have the rights to it). ![]() So, hopefully, my wish for more older 3D movies might actually be coming true. Let's hope! ![]() John. |
