USA Suture (1993) (Arrow Films) - June 21, 2016

Suture, a 90's Neo-noir will be released on BD/DVD by Arrow Films on June 21st, sourced from a 4K restoration.

Quote:
A THRILLER WHERE NOTHING IS BLACK AND WHITE

Inspired by the paranoid visions of John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate and Seconds, the desert noir of Detour and the black and white widescreen beauty of Hiroshi Teshigahara’s The Face of Another and Woman of the Dunes, Suture is one of great feature debuts – by writer-directors David Siegel and Scott McGehee – and a truly unique piece of cinema.

The wealthy and self-assured Vincent (Michael Harris) meets his blue collar half-brother Clay (Dennis Haysbert) at their father’s funeral and is struck by their similarity. He decides to murder Clay and take his identity, only Clay survives the assassination attempt with no memory and is mistaken for Vincent. The fact that Harris is white and Haysbert is black only complicates a film that probes into the nature of identity.

After viewing an early rough cut, Steven Soderbergh came on board as executive producer and enthusiastic patron. Suture went on to become a hit on the festival circuit, including Sundance where it deservedly won the award for Best Cinematography.

Oh sweet! I'm surprised Twilight Time or Kino didn't pick this title up, but I am happy about the new transfer and all the extras! I have long wanted an HD version of Suture--its black-and-white photography will look fantastic!

This isn't something I would have blind bought otherwise, but will give it a shot when my gold backer disc comes. I'm skeptical of the term neo-noir, but will keep my mind open.

IIRC they used that term on Bound, too, which is an awesome movie. This looks more boring, but hey. Neo-noir doesn't have to mean bad!

This looks super interesting but I would need to see it first, I am pretty sure.

I remember seeing this in it's initial release years ago at a film festival. Really liked it at the time. May give this blu-ray a shot.

^^same. I haven't seen it in 20 years. I recall it being a little too self conscious, but it was reasonably well made.

Very glad to see this on blu. It's a lean, stylish, confident low-budget film. Not much I can say without revealing a key point that makes it special. If you have friends who've seen it, don't let them tell you anything.

Anybody who has this; does anything in the release say when the commentary was recorded? Because if it's new, that means that Steven Soderbergh has also unretired from doing commentaries, a wonderful development indeed.

Well, I just listened to the thing, and it's obvious from the talk of the film's restoration and discussion of The Knick that Arrow really did bring Soderbergh out of his other retirement, and that the gate is now open for him and Lem Dobbs to go for Round 2 over Kafka.

DVDtalk just posted a positive review of Suture. It's a great little film that I was lucky enough to catch in theaters back in the early 90s and it holds up very, very well. I hope more people check it out.

Just rented this blindly, and was super impressed with the PC, extras, commentary, and the movie itself.
