Default Inside Moves (1980) coming from Scorpion

Quote:
we would like to thank acclaimed actor John Savage for doing not one but two on camera interviews for two of our up coming releases. One of them is the wonderful film INSIDE MOVIES from Richard Donner, and this BluRay will be available from Kino, while the yet unnamed second one will be a Ronin exclusive. So keep an eye out on this FB page for more info.

Great news. The old DVD is long OOP.

John Savage wasn't willing to be interviewed by Vinegar Syndrome for THE KILLING KIND, so perhaps he holds more affection for INSIDE MOVES.

MOVES has a great supporting performance by Amy Wright, and a fine if little-known John Barry score.

Excellent news. IM is an amazing, depressing, and also uplifting film.

I first saw the film on DVD back in the 200X's. At the time, I remember the DVD release was a big deal - given that the film was so well-done & critically acclaimed, but was also all-but forgotten at that point.

The beginning scene
[Show spoiler]when the JS character intentionally jumps out of the skyscraper window was harrowing & completely unexpected for me - the first time I saw this. After he somewhat recovered from his horrific injuries, I found it was quite poignant how Savage formed some genuine friendship(s) with the people at that neighborhood bar.

IIRC, this is also one of David Morse's first movies.

Looks like IM is finally being released to Blu on 12/10/2019. Excellent news. This is an incredible film, and it will be nice to finally see this in HD.

It's almost a year since this thread started and I have carried the film over every time I updated my "to get" list even though it didn't yet have a release date. I was beginning to wonder if it would really ever happen and I only just saw that, finally, it is going to be released (I missed the quoted post but I finally saw it in the Deep Discount "coming soon" listings).

I saw this film in the theater when it first came out (I don't think many did) and I've never forgotten it.

I saw it in the theater, mainly because I was an Amy Wright completist back then. Liked the film a lot, and look forward to the Scorpion release.

This should be an interesting release indeed, since it's a new scan (IP or negative?) that will be in the correct AR for the first time ever. As to the AR, Inside Moves was shot anamorphic scope and Scorpion's description says 2.35:1 which is correct.

All prior releases were pan and scam massacre jobs, while the current HD master going around on streaming is incorrectly presented in 1.78:1 (as that master was allegedly based on a cropped flat widescreen 35mm UK print prepared by Granada for the 2007 Lionsgate DVD).

I really like the movie, I just wish it ended the way the writer ended it, without Donner's tacked on "Happy Ending"... It loses a star and a half for me because IMHO it doesn't work. He tells in the dvd commentary where it would have ended, it would've been great....

Despite Scorpion's description, I just got the blu-ray, and can confirm that it is presented in 1.78:1.

I received it the other day and can also confirm it's 1.78:1 on the disc.

The back cover also displays 1.78:1 as the ratio (in two places) + "New 2019 HD Master"

Just watched this tonight. I haven't seen it since 1982 at the cinema (it took two years to get released in my part of the world after the US release date). The restoration is beautiful and the film itself has aged so well. Great performances all round in particular Jon Savage and Diana Scarwid. I real gem of a film and it reminded me how they don't make 'em like this anymore.

I could be wrong, but I thought this was 1.85:1 when it screened at the theatre I worked at.

It's listed as anamorphic Panavision in the WIDE SCREEN MOVIES book by Carr and Hayes.

1.78 can't be right, as IMDB says 2.35:1 Panavision which Richard Donner shot titles such as Superman in. It's possible ITV only possesses an element that was cropped to flat widescreen and Scorpion did what they could and called it a day since it's not a horror title. But then IMDB could be wrong yet again (like with The Earthling, which had incorrect AR info until someone posted photos from a flat print that exhibited dead vertical space) and Inside Moves was actually composed and shot in flat ratio.

For what it's worth, the old 2009 Lionsgate DVD has the same opening credit sequence. In both the DVD and Blu-rayu transfers, there is no mention of Panavision or any other anamorphic process.
