Japan Shin Godzilla (2016)

The latest installment in the Godzilla franchise is set to be released on BD, as well as UHD BD and DVD, on March 22, 2017 in Japan.

I made a thread for the 4K edition so I'm creating one for the regular 'ol Blu-ray as well.

There is also this:

I'm quite surprised it hasn't been officially announced and detailed by Toho online yet, as the Japanese are usually very fast with these sorts of things.

Yeah, I wonder what's taking them so long.

I really hope Toho will include English subtitles on this. If not I will simply have to wait for it to be released in America, Australia, the UK, etc. but it would be really nice to be able to get that UHD Blu-ray. It's highly unlikely (even less than the chances of this having English subs, heh) the companies that will release Shin Godzilla in the West will put it out on that format.

I'll probably pick up the UHD Blu-ray and/or the Blu-ray, but I wouldn't expect the Japanese releases to be English-friendly at all. Toho probably has far too much money to make licensing the film to different distributors in the West to risk alienating them with an English-friendly Japanese release. On the other hand, the quality of the discs should be top-notch, so they'll be worth owning for me for that reason alone.

They never have bothered with English subs in the past, so I don't really expect them to either. I think there may be some small chance of it this time since Toho and Godzilla are in a different place now than they were ten years ago. There was somewhat more focus on making something with international appeal with this film, and it followed on the heels of a successful Hollywood relaunch of the franchise, so maybe, just maybe.

Quality may be top-notch, but if it isn't English-friendly it won't be of any use to me at all. I'm not really eager to watch it with no idea of what's going on except on the most superficial "Godzilla shows up and destroys stuff and the government tries to deal with him" level.

I'm in for whatever the special edition Blu-ray is. Toho did a ton of special features about every phase of the creation of this movie so I fully expect literally hours of extras.

The downside of course is that the Japanese release will not have any English audio and/or English subtitles which has been Toho's SOP since day one. They don't want to hobble their licensing of the film outside Japan to anyone like Funmation in North America which will at least have English subtitles, but probably won't be released until Summer 2017. At least the yen has really dropped against the dollar.

Hopefully the release date sticks - I pre-ordered the nice looking "Art Of Shin Godzilla" book around June when it was supposed to come out in late July and it has been repeatedly pushed back, now to the end of December.

Pre-orders for the 4 different configurations are up on Amazon Japan. The "deluxe" version is actually 3 Blu-ray discs and the 4k version is 3 Blu-rays and a 4k disc.

I watched this on a Delta flight last week. I really enjoyed the political aspects. It was a bit like watching an episode of, "Yes Minister," or, "The Thick Of It," except the political problems came from a Godzilla attack rather than some idiot politician.
Delta showed it in Japanese with (very good) English subs.

Yeah, the excellent quality bootleg making the rounds on torrent sites I believe is a direct digital copy of what is available for international public broadcasts and has much better subtitles then the US Funmation theatrical release.

They appear to be hardcoded.

I received the long-delayed "Art Of Shin Godzilla" book today from Japan. Huge coffee table size 9 pound book (and separate soft cover script) that has over 550 full color pages of art, CGI images, photos and info from every possible aspect of the movie.

As good as it looked from some of the promotional images on places like Amazon Japan, I can say firsthand the book is WAY better then I expected. Fans of the movie will be blown away by some of the unused ideas including the idea that Godzilla would multiply by literally splitting in half like something from John Carpenter's "The Thing"as well as the alternate concepts for the Godzilla humanoids.

I don't read Japanese but it looks like there's a Steelbooks available for the 3 and 4 disc versions on Amazon.jp:

I have also watched this one during a Delta flight.
What s surprise! I agree with bradenklune, majority of the movie play out like a political black comedy. There is no "obvious hero" (maybe until the last half hour,) just a bunch of unlikable, cyclical characters talking back and fore. This is ok once you understand where the director/writer are going... Well, most important, there are enough action scenes of Godzilla destroying Tokyo, and SFX / CG is very impressive (for Toho standard.)
I am impressed Hideaki Anno has the guts to try something different (and Toho let him get away with it.) For those fans of Evangelion, there r many of Hideaki's signature visual in here also.
Veteran actor Akira Emoto's deadpan expression is pure gold!
But I can see some people will complain this does not feel like a "Godzilla" movie, and younger audiences will not have the patient to sit through all those "talking" scenes.

When I saw this for the first time I was quite disappointed. A lot of people called it Anno-like, but I felt the precise opposite. For me Anno at his best equals to films like Ritual and Love & Pop, which are very intimate character studies. I was thrilled that we might finally have a Godzilla film that combines grand scale destruction with strong character drama. Of course, that was not to be.

I ended up seeing the film for the second time (not planned) and found it more enjoyable with adjusted expectations. No, I still don't think it's a great film, but yes, as a political satire it's witty. In terms of special effects the practical stuff was cool, but the CGI sucked. Some nice atmospheric scenes, too, and effective 3.11 references. And cool to see Mikako Ichikawa given a big role. Not so cool to see Satomi "I am the worst actress in Japan" Ishihara given a big role.

btw, where is Atsuko Maeda in this? I've missed her twice now.
