I agree. I saw some famous director or someone say in an interview that Nicholson hadn't given an "unmannered" performance since REDS, but I disagree, I think he does that here too. His shtick is all turned off here and he's a real human being.

Agreed. Incredible cast, but it's Nicholson's and Penn's film. Pledged to pick this up, 'Day One.'

The shorthand I use is, there are "Jack" performances, and there are "Nicholson" performances. "Jack" is "Easy Rider", "Last Detail", "The Shining", "Batman". (The older he gets, the Jack-er he gets as a default, though I don't think ever became as much of a self-parody as Pacino.) "Nicholson" is stuff like "King of Marvin Gardens", "Missouri Breaks", and this. (I think "Five Easy Pieces" is Nicholson with one scene of Jack, and "Cuckoo's Nest" is a blend of both.)

I agree. His Jack persona always got a lot more attention and people thought it was funny or whatever. But he has given a number of real and nuanced performances.

Of late career, he was Nicholson in "Blood and Wine", "The Pledge", and "About Schmidt".

Earlier ones were "Five Easy Pieces" (as you said, mostly), "The King of Marvin Gardens", "Chinatown", "The Passenger", "The Last Tycoon", "The Missouri Breaks", "The Postman Always Rings Twice", "Reds", "The Border", he's pretty low key in "Ironweed" and his cameo in "Broadcast News".

Seems like Mill Creek is going for all of the remaining Mill Creek titles. This is the one of the ones I've been really hoping for.

They have a double feature of "Imaginary Crimes" (Harvey Keitel) and "Silent Fall" (Richard Dreyfuss), plus "The Pledge"!!!!

Nowhere near as good as Penn and Nicholson’s previous outing, THE CROSSING GUARD, but still a pleasure to see announced.

It’s horrible, but if I have to I’ll take that over the goddamn snapper case the DVD comes in. What idiot designed those things? As soon as you get any kind of humidity into the cardboard, they warp and bend and look like a potato chip with plastic ends.

Yeah, the DVD snappers from Warner were annoying beyond belief. I wish Warner had gotten rid of those sooner.

Agreed: the Crossing Guard was very good, but, I think, just a notch below The Pledge.

Because the film, brilliant as it is, was a financial disaster when it came out in theaters, and is largely forgotten by the general public. They're hoping to move a few more units of their BD.
