Of course they are...What terrible reasoning. This is going to backfire in their faces. It's like AMC wants to kill theater going...

I like the idea of having some auditoriums be texting-friendly. All the idiots can go there and not bother the rest of us.

Link won't work for me, but I can already tell that this CEO is an idiot.

If that's true, nothing like a bright light in a dark theater in your peripheral view (side view) to pull your eyes away from the big screen (as Cinemark often warns thankfully). AMC did say in some theaters which I would avoid. Speaking of Cinemark, they often suggest that people paid to see a movie, not look at cell phones during the movie.

Quote:
Would appealing to millennials involve allowing texting or cellphone use?

Yes. When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don’t ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow. You can’t tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That’s not how they live their life.

At the same time, though, we’re going to have to figure out a way to do it that doesn’t disturb today’s audiences. There’s a reason there are ads up there saying turn off your phone, because today’s moviegoer doesn’t want somebody sitting next to them texting or having their phone on.

Would you have a certain section for texting?

That’s one possibility. What may be more likely is we take specific auditoriums and make them more texting friendly. http://variety.com/2016/film/news/am...es-1201752978/
Okay, reading that clears it up. Hopefully he's suggesting a section way in back of the theater. Even so, phones make noise and give off light and what if they start talking on their cell phone during the movie?

I rather have a theater attendant walk in there to stop a distracting audience member than have to endure it the entire movie.

One time, someone in the front row was rocking back and forth in their chair for 5 minutes literally non stop as the chair squeaked over and over during the movie's dialog scenes. There were no attendants in the theater, so I mentioned that if he could stop or sit in the back. Thankfully he was reasonable and stopped, then went to the back of the theater without a conflict.

The Cinemark I go to runs a trailer before hand saying watch the big screen not the little one. Shut you sh*t off. Well not exactly that way but close to it.

Yeah, that's the perfect to go text. In a dark theater at the movies! Might as well not even dim the lights so they can see what they're doing.

I've always said. If you can't live without your phone for 2+ hours. DONT GO TO THE MOVIES!!! It's simple as that! some actual go to the movies to oh. I don't know what. WATCH THE DAMN MOVIE!

I'm glad we don't have any AMC theatres up here in Canada anymore, this would be just awful.

Expect more bootleg movie leaks if they go through with this.

I'd get a screening room box, and just build a home theater at that point. It's ridiculous that they'd think this is a good idea...

Yeah, cause nothing like watching the latest release in crappy theater quality. with the sounds of popcorn in the background and all kinds of other things.

All blu rays should have a movie theater track added in. So you feel like you're in the theater watching the film.

Only way that can work is if they install some new seating that's flipped in the opposite direction with the customer's back facing the screen to avoid the glare of the cell phone distracting the customers who are there to, you know, watch the film.

I'm completely against this, for the record, as any sane person should be. They can just as easily excuse themselves outside of the auditorium by a few measly feet from their chair if they need to text or make a call that desperately. The hallway and lobby usually have benches or other seating, so put them to use. Also, many theaters have crappy reception to begin with, so it defeats the purpose of bothering to text.

Yeah, but you know. People are lazy. And feel since they paid. They can do whatever they want. And have no consideration for anyone else but themselves.

This kind of pisses me off, well if other theater chains follow suit then it will really piss me off.

Instead of trying to teach the younger generation how to pay attention and not be so self absorbed, they decide to just cater to those entitled s***s?? WHY go to a movie if you're not even going to watch it.

What does the merger do for AMC?

By putting together the No. 2 and No. 4 players in the industry, we create a new No. 1 player. There’s extraordinary amounts of research that say that No. 1 players in industries are often the most successful players in their industries. If that turns out to be true, I’d rather be the No. 1 player than the No. 2 player.

Exactly! Just go to the mall. Or a fast food place. I know most have Wi-Fi now.

But they're doing this. Because they feel they can get more money. Almost like saying screw you to the loyal customers. To shill out for some brats with the attention span of a nano-second.

I just hope Regal doesn't do this as well. Luckily I also have Cinetopia up where I live but the last thing this younger and heavily self absorbed/entitled generation needs is people catering to them and not smacking them upside the head for being rude and inconsiderate.
