Default Sony stocks UP - Toshiba stocks DOWN!

Sorry if this has already been posted:

Quote:
The new year brought about a startling new development to the format wars that may finally bring about its conclusion. We're talking about Warner Bros.' decision to go Blu-ray exclusive. Following this, Sony stocks at the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose.

Sony stocks saw a brief slump a few days ago, along with the stocks of other Japanese companies, due to some economical fluctuations. With Warner Bros. Entertainment's announcement however, Sony's stocks rose 0.9% in the market.

On the other side of the spectrum, stocks of one of the largest HD DVD backers, Toshiba, fell 2.5%, the lowest point it has seen in more than nine months. A spokesman for Toshiba expressed the company's disappointment with Warner Bros.' decision.

For some stock holders that could be $9000.
It all depends on how much they have invested.

not really. While this is good news, it is far from great, 5-10% stock price jump news. Blu-ray has beat HD DVD, but it is still uncertain in many investors minds if blu-ray has what it takes to go as mainstream as say dvd.

over on the nikkei toshiba dropped 2.25% yesterday. there stock price has decreased nearly 30% in the past few months.

whereas sony is up about 15% in the past few months. its up today

the real stock you guys should be looking at is twx (time warner). bewkes seems to be very active with making some much needed changes (blu-ray is one of many). twx has been pretty beat up lately, so now is a good buying time i feel.

The ONLY thing that will appease Toshiba stock holders is Toshiba cutting their losses and dropping HD DVD ASAP. The longer they stay in this war, the more they bleed money and their stock holders will continue to punish them for it.

This is what I was waiting to see. But wow, it actually influenced stock price -- isn't the format war supposed to be financially insignificant?

How's the Microsoft stock doing? Oh yeah, they've never had anything to do with HD DVD, rrrright.

I agree. If Toshiba do not swallow its pride and start to offer Blu-ray drives in their laptops, it will hurt even more. Over time, this will affect their set top electronics, computer sales plus royalty from SD.

it is insignificant. sony really shouldn't budge too much from this and it doesn't appear like it has. blu-ray is not even close to being mass market and it won't be for a very long time. blu-ray is not surely going to be successful, but could.

however, toshiba is a different story. after wb hd dvd is surely going to die. Toshiba had told investors HD DVD was going to take off this year, so this is certainly a big disappointment to the ones that follow the stock closely and the HD ware closely. There is no future in HD royalties for toshiba. add to the fact that they are getting less and less every year from dvd royalties as sales go down and we should see the stock go down. which it appears it has.

In a nutshell their has been no winner declared in the HD war, however a loser has been.

id have to think of Toshiba keeps this cocky arrogant attitude of "we are down but not out" up their stockholders would be FURIOUS when they effectively shoot any chance at royalties or anything form BD sales in the foot.

well, a lot of stockholders are not following the HD war that closely. Toshibas big drop from this (the 2% is a small one, as the good traders see this as bad news and get out before it plummets) is going to come at their quarterly meeting. they told the investors hd dvd is going to take off and they havn't said so otherwise, therefore any investor who doesn't follow the hd war closely is still under the guidence that HD DVD will take off this year. at Q1's report the are going to have a lot of red (pun intended) on their balance sheets and give quantitive numbers on sales, at this point its going to be obvious to everybody that HD DVD was a very poor and costly mistake, that is when the stock will drop big, as they will also have to address declining dvd royalties too. the only way this doesn't happen is if tosh throws in the towel now, which i don't think they are. expect by the end of Q2 that the investors have put a lot of pressure for some people to "spend time with their families" and for HD DVD to get canned 100%, at that time Paramount will come back to blu.

Imagine if they go through with the plan to put an HD DVD drive in every laptop.
