Yes heck yeah both this and Tron Legacy coming to 4K physically later this year is amazing news. I think Disney is starting to slowly, but surely put out more and more of their catalog through Sony which is good, and hopefully this leads to them putting out more new to Blu-Ray stuff from Touchstone, Fox, and Hollywood Pictures. Honestly, it's about freaking time Disney started caring more about the titles they own.

Good stuff coming to 4K physically this year
The Sound of Music
Tron
Tron Legacy
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Lilo and Stitch
Tombstone
Kingdom of Heaven

With hopefully even more coming this year

Sign me up for all three TRON movies - if they are standard cases (or a boxset) at mainstream prices and the transfers are treated with respect. These are movies where I want all of the HDR. I want that blue to burn-in my OLED.

What a great year to be a consumer of 4k UHD Blu-rays.

I'd be surprised af if either Tron movies aren't steelbook only. I'd presume the only reason Lilo & Stitch wasn't is because it's a family/kid movie.

If they're steelbooks, I hope they space it out. I can't be spending $200 a month on multiple steelbooks they're charging $10-30 more for lol

I'm curious if Disney suddenly caring for physical catalog releases is due to the various 2023 strikes involving things like streaming residuals and now they're trying to recoup some costs.

It started when Bob Iger replaced Bob Chapek, Iger wanted to to re-ignite physical media due to the rubberband response from consumers to streaming.

I'm well aware of that, but it's funny to me that it suddenly began happening, along with Warner Bros. releasing the CN catalog physically, right after the various 2023 strikes occurred.

What are the odds we get a steelbook for this, or all 3 Tron films in a steelbook case?

Yesssss. Was hoping Ares would lead to this.

For anyone interested, there's a great interview with Bill Kroyer (one of the principal animators for the Tron CGi) here from a few years ago:

It goes over a lot of things and I don't seem to be able to timestamp it, but 31:25 where they begun discussing the early CG work and into Tron (the whole interview is great if you're interested in animation though). One of the things that impressed me from the discussion was that for every CG scene, they had at best two "takes", because they had to work out everything by hand before feeding it into the computer to render, and it took so long to render out that they couldn't afford to get the calculations wrong.

I have the DVD release poster framed and it's one of the larger ones. I was working at Blockbuster when that happened in 2002. So, it's taken nearly 25 years to be released on three formats.

I expect they're all going to get Steelbooks because that's just what Disney does these days.

But if we're lucky, maybe they'll throw in the Uprising animated series on BD in a Steelbook also to get the whole franchise out on disc.

Of that list, the only ones I don't really care about are The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Kingdom of Heaven. I'll hopefully be able to afford the rest, though - there's still a ton of unbought 4Ks in my Amazon wish list. Other Disney films I'd love to own in the best quality are The Three Musketeers, Bicentennial Man, Mary Poppins, The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy, and proper restorations for the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Shot in Super Panavision 70. Oh man, I hope it's a whole new scan. It would look AMAZING.

TRON: Uprising is an EXCELLENT and uniquely styled animated series, much better than TRON: Legacy IMO, and was unceremoniously cancelled waaaaay too soon. I have a boot Blu rip of the Disney+ stream that looks pretty good but I’d upgrade in a heartbeat. And I’ll definitely be picking up the 4K OG TRON. I’ll stick with the 3-D Blu of Legacy, even though the 3-D is super weak most of the time. Hoping that Ares and its 3-D quality will be a step up from Legacy, which isn’t terrible as far as sequels go, but it’s not a patch on the story, cast, design, vivid colors, and memorable music of the first film. Uprising is a much more worthy and entertaining followup. I’d really love to see THAT re-rendered in 3-D and on the big screen!
