My Father's Dragon (Cartoon Saloon & Netflix, 2021)

Tomm Moore & Nora Twomey, directors of The Secret of Kells, will team up again for the adaptation of My Father's Dragon. The 1948 children's book by Ruth Stiles Gannet will be written for the screen by Meg LeFauve, who wrote both Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur for Pixar, supported by John Morgan.

The story, told by the child of the main character, is about the brave boy Elmer Elevator. When an adventurous cat tells him about a baby dragon hold captive by the animals of Wild Island, Elmer decides to run away from home and save the blue and yellow striped dragon. He will need all of his creativity to stay out of the hands (paws) of the dangerous animals living there ...

The book, famous for the black and white illustrations, got two sequels : Elmer and the Dragon and The Dragons of Blueland. It's not sure if these will be included too. My Father's Dragon had an animated movie-version before in 1977, directed by Masami Hata.

Tomm Moore is currently working on the Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea follow-up, Wolfwalkers. Nora Twomey is doing the final work on The Breadwinner, which will be released later this year.

NETFLIX announces MY FATHER’S DRAGON for 2021

A 2D animated family feature film from director Nora Twomey (The Secret of Kells, The Breadwinner) and written by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur), with story by Meg LeFauve and John Morgan, who are also executive producers.

Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures are producing together with Paul Young of Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells, The Breadwinner) and Tomm Moore. Based on the Newbery Honored children’s novels by Ruth Stiles Gannett, My Father’s Dragon tells the story of young run-away Elmer Elevator, who searches for a captive Dragon on Wild Island and finds much more than he could ever have anticipated. Alan Moloney and Ruth Coady of Parallel Films will also serve as executive producers alongside Gerry Shirren.
