Default My 3rd PS3

I'm just leaving my house to go return my second PS3 and get my thrid. I know that the PS3 have a really good failure rate, something like <1%, but it just sucks that I've had such bad luck with them. Thank god I got it at costco and they have a great return policy!!! Just thought I'd share my sorrows...

sorry to hear that man....

That is really bad luck, I've only heard a few reports online, BUT ALL electronics fail. Third time is a charm my man!

EDIT: saw your game list, you should look into Uncharted, and Resistance, two great games.

Both times the BD drive failed. the first one was a luanch PS3 that lasted about a year and the second only lasted a few months

hopefully the 3rd time is the charm!!! I actually just traded R&C to Bolleche for Uncharted, so i'm excited for that to get here. I also had resistance for a while. great game. I'm stuck on COD4 right now though. can't wait for resistance 2!

Weird, but I noticed in your sig that you've upgraded the machine to 160G. I wonder if that could be one of the causes of the failures. Just thinking out loud since these are typically rock solid machines.

Yeah, I don't know. technically it shouldn't matter right? I mean a HDD is a HDD. I even kept it at 5400rpms to stick with the stock specs...

It's sitting on the lowest shelf of my TV stand all by itself. should be plenty of room.

Yeah, that is terrible luck man. Best of luck on the new one.

I don't think it can be the HDD. I mean, they encourage people to exchange it.

I've been wondering, does the new PS3 read the info from the old drive when you swap? Or do you need to do a back-up?

You've gotta back it up because it formats the new drive when you put it in.

Hmm, so what, exactly, is failing? The 160G HDD that you put into it or the original HDD that came with it? I ask because if you kept it stock, does it fail? Or does it only fail with the upgraded HDD?

Perhaps it's the brand of HDD that you're using to upgrade?

Just trying to help and understand since I plan to upgrade my PS3 eventually.

The BD drive is failing not the HDD. You can turn the PS3 on and do everything like normal: use the net, PSN, play demos, watch trailers, etc... you just can't play a DVD or BD or game.

Just curious - do you put in DVD-R or copied discs to your drive alot? I noticed that Sony CD/DVD drives hate badly copied discs (be it "unofficial" stuff or just backedup DVDs) because the laser alignment would be off if you do that a lot. NOt sure if yours is a physical problem (meaning it won't "suck" in the disc correct) or what I assume to be the laser problem...

Im just pulling this assumption out of my ass but im just perdicting that it was a half damaged PS3 or Costco is a lousy retail market hence it's great return policy. All electronics fail but the PS3 is known for it's low hardware failure. Maybe you just got unlucky.

You can try turning your luck around by returning it for a full refund then buy from another retailer. Just make sure you take care of it.

Just throwing this out there:

Do you have any Microsoft or Toshiba products in your house?

Could be Gremlins.
