Quote:
Twenty years after their last holiday at a fading vacation resort, Sophie reflects on the rare time spent with her loving and idealistic father Calum. At 11-years-old, as the world of adolescence creeps into Sophie's view, Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood. Sophie's recollections become a powerful and heartrending portrait of their relationship, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't.

Figured a couple of months ago that this would be an A24-exclusive. Excited that it's getting a release, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by the lack of extras. Especially given that the limited distribution of A24's in-house releases (and how the company markets them as collector's items) leads to them being pricier than the average release, I was hoping for a bit more in terms of bonus content.

Unfortunate there's no 4K, but at least it's getting something.

What's this "burned it to disc" tagline I'm seeing on all the promos for this Blu-ray disc? As in BD-R?

Pretty positive they are just being clever with terms due to the title of the movie, almost guaranteed a pressed disc.

The disc photo shows the BD logo, so it can't be BD-R. The artwork/case can be hard to tell, and pressed can sometimes not have the logo for some releases, but I haven't seen a BD-R disc have a logo yet, those are always correctly labelled as "Blu-ray disc."

Surprising that the American disc is so light on extras after looking at the UK disc.

And I'm honestly not surprised it didn't get a 4K release as there doesn't seem to be a 4K of it available for rent or purchase on the streaming platforms, which will probably also apply to "Close" if A24 does a store exclusive of that (which I'm thinking will be next).

I wouldn't count out a 4K release of Close just yet. It might not be a box office juggernaut, but it's picking up awards left and right (48 and counting per IMDB).

I am getting the MUBI instead, it's cheaper and it has more special features. If they're going to charge $30, it better had more special features, but nope.

Maybe MUBI produced them and A24 didn't want to pay for it? UK release is B locked so that's a no go for me.

$30 is a tad steep, does A24 ever have a sale on their store? I'd probably be more inclined to get it and Marcel the Shell if they ever were cheaper lol

MUBI wouldn’t have produced Tuesday or the deleted scene.

$30 is far too much for a BD that includes nothing special outside of postcards, so I'll opt for the digital copy on Apple TV (which includes the commentary). Had they released it in 4K, I might've considered it.

Just saw this in the cinema today. Missed the first couple of minutes, had no idea what was supposed to be going on, watched the first couple of minutes on Mubi when I got home and...turns out they change nothing.

What am I missing here?

I think part of the film’s impact depends on when you grew up: if you have any nostalgia for the 90s and its music like Macarena, what your relationship with your father is like and especially if you’re in your 20s looking back on what your childhood was like. Or if you went on any holidays similar to the holiday in this film. As we’ve seen at the UK box office, it struck a chord with lots of British people.

Maybe it was just that I thought I'd missed more than I had, but I spent a lot of time trying to figure out where they were, why/when the parents split, what the dad was so upset about, and being frustrated that it had presumably been answered in the bit I didn't see. Had I known none of that information was available, I might have settled into the mood of it better.

Still not seeing where the textual evidence for "Sophie watching back 20 years later trying to come to terms with her relationship with her dad" is, though (yes, the final shot, but that hardly makes it a lens through which you can watch the film on first viewing, and still doesn't support all the relationship stuff). Or what the weird flashing lights sequences were about.

Dunno. Just felt like it raised a lot of questions and didn't really give any answers, but not in a way that felt intentional.

Read the Wikipedia plot summary and I'm wondering if I even watched the right film.

Quote:
Sophie from Edinburgh...Calum, who moved to London...amicably separated from Sophie's mother...[in the rave sequences an] adult Sophie witnesses him from afar...she attempts to get closer to him but fails
I got none of that. Couldn't recognise jack shit in the rave sequences, "amicably" is somewhat implied but not stated all that firmly, and the rest just wasn't in the film at all as far as I noticed.

Seems to be treated as a given that she never saw him after the event of the film, although, again, not in the text.
