And here’s an interesting surprise: Paramount is releasing the Shogun miniseries, starring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune, on Blu-ray on 3/25/14.

Now this is awesome news. I remember watching it as a kid and how brutal it seemed at the time.

I'll never forget the scene where Richard Chamberlain
[Show spoiler]had to watch one of his men being lowered in boiling oil/water
. Very brutal!
Wow, this is something I'd never even think would make it to BD. A fantastic treat indeed. Can't wait to hear more.

I can't believe I'm reading this. Completely out of the blue. (!)

What are the odds they will include the nudity from the theatrical version? Slim to none. But I'll be getting this no matter what.

I'm speechless.

One of the best miniseries ever made. Looking forward to it.

I wish more miniseries from this era would make it to blu....Masada, for instance, and maybe the Blue and the Grey....

I was thinking the same thing - a quick onscreen decapitation was pretty shocking for my young impressionable mind and eyes.

I hope at some point Paramount could release 'The Winds of War' and it's sequel 'War and Remembrance'

Shogun is not only my favorite mini-series, but also my fathers. He also liked Winds of War and War and Remembrance. He has the VHS of Shogun and I bought him the dvds of Winds of War. I could not find War and Remembrance, but that was before I shopped online at Amazon.

Great News !

Very exciting news - was just talking to a friend about Shogun yesterday. Probably not a Day 1 (unless I can pre-order at 45% off or more), but still... I anticipate a great release!

What a delightful and unexpected surprise. Hopefully the extensive special features are carried over. Here's hoping we get the digibook treatment! Now let's pray it does well so it can get other studios to release more miniseries. Just imagine Roots, North & South, Centennial or The Thorn Birds to mention a few in HD.

I'd love to see both on BD, they're the films that started my lifelong interest in WWII.

Would be great if Paramount released Winds, but they don't control W&R on video and never have, it is controlled by MPI Home Video, a boutique outfit.

This has got to be one of the best mini series ever with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune.

Day 1 for sure.

Interesting how Centennial and Thornbirds are two of the best mini series ever from the 1970s and 1980s. Richard Chamberlain starred in both so no surprise there.

Is there any evidence that this could be cropped in the Bluray to fit the widescreen TVs?
I hope NOT!!!!
