Would be nice it they filmed a quick 30 minute extra of
[Show spoiler]What happened with Vick after the Finale.

I always hoped they'd do a TV movie followup where Vic saves Ronnie somehow.

Seriously though. This show was still being filmed when blu-ray came into existence. Spending over a year to get it suitable for BD release is just ridiculous.

It’s called laziness.

If they just transferred it OAR 1:33 as it should be, then it wouldn't be taking so long. But since people need to fill their screens and they have to crop every shot to 1.78, they are doing it essentially shot by shot so at least it looks better.

So It's only ridiculous because it's being cropped and not presented in OAR, but not the time it's taking because that's understandable.

The OAR is the cropped version. It was shot in 16:9, and cropped to 4:3 for US TV release. The entire 16:9 is what was offered on the DVD's, and later HD TV offerings.

Putting out a 7 season show on Blu Ray would be expensive at the time I presume. Add the back and forth with getting it to BD at all. Shawn tweeted, or in interviews, stated that Sony/bosses didn't think the show would look good on BD to be worth it. He is now overseeing the process, which may be put on a back burner every time he is working on his show Timeless that got picked up for a second season.

Filmed for wide screen safe, EU dvds looks just fine (not the case for the Wire's intro on BD). Why would they have to "recrop" anything when they released 1-7 in 16:9 on dvd?
It isn't a case of "Seinfeild" either, so you are only making storm in a glass of water as far as I'm concerned.

edit: some mistakes

Awesome, more revisionist 16X9 changes. Should be 4:3 OAR, but I doubt it will be.

They filmed it in widescreen but cropped it for television. From what I've seen, I actually prefer it in full frame. It's a chaotic show and the 4:3 version enhanced that. But nonetheless I am excited one of my favorite shows will be updated in such a manner.

The DVDs are all 16x9 unless you can find old versions. I've watched them all twice and had no idea it was "supposed" to be 4x3. Guess I was too busy enjoying one of the best shows ever to harp on some possible dead space on the sides of the frames. It has shaky handheld photography that expertly catches character reactions in an almost offhand manner and is designed to maintain intensity, there are very rarely carefully composed shots in a traditional sense, so having extra picture is not a problem. The show was acted as if it was a play, as the actors had to be ready for a sudden camera pan to them at any moment. It was very original at the time and very effective and makes "dead space" much less of an issue since people couldn't relax when out of frame and crew people couldn't be anywhere close to where the camera was pointing, unlike something like Buffy with standard, planned, slow camera moves that could result in things like crew members being visible in the extra space on the sides.

Dunno if I'll rebuy it on bluray since the DVDs are pretty good (unlike the Wire) but the aspect ratio is not worth crying about and the show is right up there with Breaking Bad. The way all actions on the show have consequences and no season is a reset is a breath of fresh air in cop show world. The horrific final episodes build inevitably over the years.

It's an incredible show, don't be dissuaded by the sketchy first several episodes and their gratuitous rap-metal.

It was only ever 4:3 in the US. Here in Australia it aired on TV and was released on DVD in 16:9 from the very beginning.

Fantastic show, and 2017 is about when I'd be ready to watch this show all the way through again. Perfect timing.

I was going to blind but this show on DVD, guess i can wait. Hopefully they do as good a job as HBO did with The Wire.

I'll be damned, Shawn Ryan has said no to this for a very long time due to the nature of the beast. One of my Top 5 Shows of all time and yes, I still want to kick Shane's ass after all these years. Day one for sure ...

I never even thought about upgrading an entire series from dvd to blu but jesus this sounds incredible. I watch it once every couple of years and the last time was 2013 when I showed it to my wife. Depending on the price this could very well be a must buy. Every episode of this show is a masterpiece and as a whole represents television at its finest.
