For audiophile music (sacd & dvd-audio) the rule is to use the direct method. The idea is not to have any processing effect the original sound. For movies this is not necessary and the idea is to get what sounds best to you & the speakers. I have both & I use the direct for the music + have some (minor) processing for the Blu-rays. If everything is even - leave it on direct.

Good Luck

Thanks!! Is the multichannel option on the first on for HD DVD systems only?
I haven't tried it because I am very happy with using "direct" for both options!!
