Hey everyone, I couldn't wait and did purchase the 1080p 50in kuro and got about 450 bucks off at bestbuy! Thanks for all the tips on haggling and tv choosing etc!
Now what? I should have the tv tomorrow. I figure i'll burn that break in dvd, that's not too much to handle, but calibration etc? What are the things I need to look into for my new plasma? thanks again everyone! |

awesome doby! lol I was hoping you'd reply. alright i'll probably follow those settings for the first 150hr then follow along with the new settings.
So am I supposed to leave it on with those settings while using the break in disc and then rese the settings if I want to watch a movie inbetween? How important is professional calibration after this? |

It's important if you want it ISF calibrated.
You can always wait to see how it looks in two weeks and then if you feel you want to get more out of the picture, pay $200-$300 to get an ISF certified technician to come and calibrate it. I don't bother with it, I'm sure many do though. You probably want to get it re-calibrated every 6 months or so to stay in "reference" mode. I'd check it with these settings first though. If you change to TV, switch to the other settings, not the break-in ones. |

are there these settings anywhere for a cable box or more importantly for a PS3?

Break in is about 100 hours. Try to avoid static images like tv branding marks or watching too much 4:3 or Cinemascope (1:2.35) media to avoid burning in the black bar lines. You'll see ghosting, which goes away as soon as the picture changes or after a few minutes without the offending item on the screen. You can also grey out the bars on most TVs, but I think it looks ugly. Burn in isn't a problem like it was a few years ago, but it can happen.
If you go in there with your receipt, I'm sure they'd tack on calibration for you if you live in an area where you can get a ISF certified one. You can check on the Image Science Foundation website. It's $200 through BBuy, but sometimes they try and send someone that isn't certified and they've trained themselves. If you want an experienced "name" to come and do it, it'll usually be $300-$500 depending if you have a home audio system. They do turn down the temperature of your colors, which does save you a few dollars and extend the life of your screen. They limit you to two inputs in the agreement, but I've never seen a tech hold to that. All the HDMI are the same anyway. Picture settings, while they can be helpful, are user-specific and room specific. You don't see the same things everyone else sees. I've seen some wonky settings on AVS for my PX75U in the bedroom compared to what I have it set at. That has to do with their eyes, the lighting of the room they have it in, etc... I figure if you're buying a $2,000 (or in your case $4000) TV, what's 5% - 10% to make sure that its running at its best? Last edited by Blinkman987; 04-01-2008 at 11:06 PM. |

Plug it in and watch it
![]() Sorry just had to do that. I have the 50" and you are just going to absolutely love it. I concur with all, low settings for the first 100 hours, set with calibration disk after broke in and sit back and enjoy that thing. |
