Default Blu-ray in the bedroom

I know blu-ray drives have been discussed, etc. on this site, but I'm interested in finding out if anyone has made any conversions. I remember seeing one for a macintosh that you could just swap the drive.

My deal is that my girlfriend, is getting tired of the DVDs that we have and that we watch in the bedroom. I've got a small bedroom so I have a 27" westinghouse with a built in DVD player. I can't really go any larger because of the area where the TV sits. I'm willing to replace the TV if need be, or I am willing to have someone take it apart and re-install a blu-ray drive...or do it myself. In the bedroom, I really just don't want any cords anywhere, period , at all, or anything, so a standalone player is really out of the question.

Like I say I am down to modify if there is a drive I can use to replace a DVD drive in the built-in, otherwise I may just have to let her keep buying DVDs

as long as it can be done that's really all im worried about (feasability, a little extra cost, whatver). I just don't want to have to buy a second copy of a movie she gets to watch in the bedroom, cause its good and I want it on blu. I would just as soon have her only ever buy blu-rays, which would be VERY easy if she could watch them in the bed room

No TVs available yet with blurays built in.
The closest thing so far is this by Sony, but it is much more than a TV and I assume a bit over your price range.

well, you would have to find a drive that could even fit...then youd have to figure out how to take the TV apart without damaging it...then you would need to know exactly how to connect without zapping yourself first!...

possible? maybe for macgyver...worthwhile? not even Macgyver would go through the trouble.

27"?

I know this is silly, but I think it is just as silly for me to buy the SD version of every movie that she wants to watch. I really would rather not have a standalone player, but I guess I'll just drill some holes and have it be in the closet. Far from elegance, but elegance doesn't really seem to be on most people's minds for some odd reason.

I mean I had a friend tell me I was dumb cause I have my KURO "float" right above a chest I had specifically made for it (there is 1/4" clearance). He was telling me it was stupid cause now it didn't look like it hung on the wall? Well no it doesn't but trust me it looks extremely elegant, and I can pull it out from the wall if need be. So it's not about looks its about functionality.

Are internal blu-ray drives the same as a traditional DVD drive? like you question 27", it's not like it would kill me to have to replace it.

But as I said, I just don't see a point in buying anything SD if its on blu, and the girl just doesn't understand that, she wants to watch in bed. This is not a quality issue for me, it is an ease of use issue

Why not just get a DVD recorder and make copies of your Disc on SD media?

id do a ps3 stand it upright 1 hdmi one power cable thats it, you should mesure your tv most 32inch tvs are about the same as 27's so you could probly measure and most 27s are like 22-29 inches high and 32s are around 27-32 so if you can go a few inches chances are you could upgrade in size

Short of having a degree in Electrical Engineering, you probably won't be able to switch out the existing DVD for a Blu-ray one (different power requirements, chip sets, bus speeds, proprietary connectors, etc.). Swaping out same technology for same technology is easier than two totally different technologies, especially when part of the DVD technology is incorporated with the TV and probably on the same circuit boards.

because it is illegal to discuss this here and I haven't been able to find it on my own. Once I find the information, I will definitely be doing this

If you are not quality conscious about the setup in the bedroom, you may consider an AV sender. Depending on the size of the house and the positions of the bedroom TV set and the blu-ray player, you may get satisfactory results.

If you decide to go this way, you need to test the setup, hence you need to purchase an AV sender with a good return policy.

It would not be an easy task but it's possible to swap the drive but you would need NEW firmware to read the Bluray disc since it's not the same as a DVD.

This seems to be nearly impossible.

Most drives are pretty standard now, some will change up the interface / power cable but in general the drive in nothing special. Now the "impossible" as you say and why I capped the "NEW", you have to program for the Bluray disc if you want it to read it, I think it will might work with the DVD but Bluray no way as is

I know you said you didn't want any wires at all or to consider an external... but what I'd do is find some cheap used or refurbished 1.0 profile player for the bedroom for <$200 to tide me over and wait until Sony releases the LCD TV with internal Blu-ray player they mentioned recently.
