It was suggested to me that if I drop $2K on that Denon player, it really doesn't make sense given the "price nature" of my gear; I really don't think this has anything to do with anything, but will it really essentially be a "wasted mismatch" if I hooked the Denon up to gear that doesn't cost as much as it? Would that even make a difference?
I mean...my Onkyo receiver decodes all the new formats via HDMI 1.3a and my Sony SXRD can display 1080p high definition...so is the Denon really overkill? ![]() |

LOL...as always, thanks a bunch, Crackin...
I will DEFINITELY take all that into consideration! I appreciate your input. While I probably won't sell the 605 because I really like it for my needs, I will indeed invest in good floor standing towers for the main channels -- and I'll probably go with a mid priced BD player as suggested... Have a nice sleep! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think you should buy it. It's the only way for you to understand that your Blu-Ray expectations are irrational.

I agree with crackin. There are better ways to spend around $1500 in your system.
$2000 basically for the Realta is too much. I would check out reviews on the new group of players coming in the next 2 months, and see how the upscaling is. The new Pios are supposed to do a good job at it (1.1), and the new Sammy 2500 (2.0) will have the Reon chip which is made by the same company as the Realta and does an excellent job upscaling. While I own a Denon AVR, and they make great stuff, you may want to check out the Players section on this site. If you can wait a few months, there will be some new models coming out this Fall which may meet your needs at a lower price.

Let me see if I can help you or not. I was really into upscaling and have a Samsung BD-P1200 with REON and a Onkyo TX-SR875 also with REON. They are both used on my Samsung HL56A650 1080P DLP TV.
I have compared my SS BD player to my PS3 on standard DVD playback. Well the BD-P1200 does do a better job at upscaling to 1080P. However it does not make it look like HD quality. Some discs do look better than others but overall there is only so much you can do with the standard def sources in our everyday home equipment. I should also note the BD-P1200 does look better than the PS3 for Bluray playback but lacks newer DTS & Dolby codecs. As for my Onkyo TX-SR875 I mainly use it for my Moto HD DVR when I'm watching standard def material. Not always though I usually only apply 1080P when it may benefit. The problem I have with it though is the color is as not bright as it is when in passthrough. So no miracles here for me and I've tried every possible combination of user settings for the TV, BD player and even the hidden menu on the Onkyo. If you are in need of a new Bluray player and do not want extra equipment then maybe look for an upconverting BD player. Maybe get an upconverting dvd player for dvd use if you already have a Bluray player. Being patient would be the best solution perhaps. I have no experience with Realta or other upconversion technologys so maybe somebody with that technology/s can lend you their thoughts. I really do not think however it will perform miracles like we all wish. More research and maybe you will find the right solution for you. Good luck! |

Like you, I have the 1200 and found the upscaling to be very fine, indeed. I purchased the Denon when it was released in March, and its upscaling is even better. No miracles, but IMHO and by all accounts the best Blu-ray player upscaling currently available. Only the OP can decide, by personal observation, which player's upscaling looks best to him and certainly only he can decide if it's worth the cost to him.

yeah I just wanted to share my experience with what I have. I wouldn't know how much better the Realta is but I'm thinking that he was expecting scaling in general would improve PQ to hidef quality.
I would never tell somebody to not buy something I personally have no experience with (Denon w/Realta). I just wanted to let him know I wasn't seeing any miracles and maybe he was expecting more like I was at first until reality sank in. Still upconversion on DVD is better to have than not. Hidef can and does spoil you ![]() |

Thanks Woody; I don't want to consider a Samsung either, but I suppose I will consider the Pioneers and see over the next two months as you advised. |
