Default New Reciever

Alright, so I am planning on getting the Yamaha RX-V2600 (I have the 2500 right now, but it doesn't have HDMI and I need it for my Denon DVD player and my Blu-Ray player since I'd like to use PCM audio tracks). Now, what are the odds of me buying this and then down the road finding out that even if I have a blu-ray player that decodes DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD, i'll still need a reciever with HDMI 1.3? I don't want to spend all this money right now and find out that I'll actually need something different down the road. Also, is it possible to still use THX with PCM audio? I know I can with 2 Channel stuff, but I am not sure with full surround.

I use my existing reciever to take the PCM audio from my PS3 and my upconverting DVD through TosLink. Why can't you use the fiberoptic until the technology settles down on the audio side, IMHO it makes no since to upgrade yet... I still use my 5 year old Yahama reciever to take the PCM signals from the PS3, and it sounds great, without spending a bundle, and hoping I bet on the right audio technology.

FWIW, while I use the TosLink for the audio, I use the HDMI for video only

I'm gonna keep using my Pioneer's analog inputs until I can upgrade to a multiple HDMI 1.3 receiver.

I can't imagine I'll be missing out in the meantime.

Iceman_II how are you getting full PCM audio over toslink. I thought over toslink it cuts it down to 2 channel PCM?

All I know is that I tell the PS3 to output PCM, and I get surround sound out of the receiver.

Is it true 5.1?
I don't know

Is it good enough till at least 1.3 comes out (and probably until it drops a bit in price)?
Hell yes

EDIT:
When I refer to toslink, I am refering to the optical cables, not the original TOShiba LINK system.... current optical systems transfer speeds are at 125Mbps... I'm finding it difficult to believe that that kind of bandwidth is all for only two channels

Edit again:
However this thread has got me thinking, I think this weekend I will play around with the bitstream setting, in any case, I won't be forking over the bucks for a new reciever until AT LEAST HDMI 1.3 becomes a reality

I would absolutely wait for an hdmi 1.3 receiver. They are right around the corner now. The Denon 38xx should retail for around $1500.

But that's around a grand more than I'd be paying for the 2600. And no, you cannot get 5.1 sound using the optical out and selecting PCM. It downgrades to 2.0. And from what I hear there wont be recievers with HDMI 1.3 until late this year/early next year.

Plus I look at it this way. Sooner or later I am going to need a new Blu-Ray player (like when the new audio formats come out). When that happens, I'll be able to use the player to decode it and send it to my reciever with HDMI 1.2. But if I wait for a reciever with HDMI 1.3, I'll be spending 1500 on a reciever and 1000 (unless the prices start dropping which wouldn't surprise me) on a blu-ray player. So if I wait, i'd be spending around 2500, if I get a reciever now, I'd be spending around 1500 in the long run. And if I got a reciever now, I'd still be able to take advantage of the HD audio formats in the future...
