Default Considering New Reciever.....

I was just wondereing if the Onkyo 805 is worth the extra money over the 705. Any input at all would be much appreciated.

Amazon has/had the 805 on sale for less than $100 more than the 705. The 805 adds another zone and is significantly larger than the 705. In my opinion, the 805 isn't worth the extra cost at the regular price. Both support the latest audio codecs and both have 3 HDMI inputs.

Now, I'm not positive on this but I think the 805 will allow you to apply Dolby Pro-logic IIx over multichannel PCM whereas the 705 can't. If this is true (again, not sure), and you have a 7.1 system, then the 805 would be the better option.

If that is not a concern, it would depend on what you want I guess.

For my money, I'd go with the 805.

Burr-brown dac's are also used in the 805. This is enough reason to go with the 805. It really is a steal, even at the full $1099 msrp IMO.

The 875 improves on the video. That's the one to get if you can find a deal somewhere.

I just got my Pioneer Elite and had Best Buy Magnolia Price match to a local NY store I found on the internet for $1035.00 That is from a MSRP of $1600.

I cannot say enough about how awesome this receiver is. With 4 HDMI inputs, Ipod Dirrect connect, Sirius or XM direct connect, a microphone you hook up to auto adjust sound levels......and so on and so on. It has all the latest audio supported playback, including True HD and THX. It is 7:1 and has a ton of inputs. It reses analog up to 1080i digital to send pure digital to TV, AMAZING!!

This has been rated as the best on the market and now I know why.

If you look now, the pioneer is 1 of 3 Best Bang for the buck. Of course the average receiver they review is about $4K

The 805 does all those things you just mentioned and costs significantly less than $1000.

Pioneer gets great reviews. This is my second one, I used to have the VSX-9900. I owned a Nakamichi in between which was a great starter High End Receiver.

The Pioneer Elite I mentioned above is feature rich and very capable of expansion. With 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output, IPOD, XM, and SIRIUS direct connects, I cannot say enough.

Here is a review of an even pricer Model, and the model reviewed has little in the way of HDMI.

Please look closer before making those type of broad comments to fellow members, some people just read them and take your word for it, and your statement is untrue.

First the 805 has only 3 HDMI in
NO DIRECT CONNECT FOR IPOD. The difference is total integration and expandability. The display of your receiver displays the song title from your ipod, etc. Plus other processing differences and more.

You compare:

Pioneer:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...TXH.Kuro?tab=B

Onkyo:
http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...s=Receiver&p=f

Now the 875 is more comparable, BUT STILL DOES NOT HAVE IPOD DIRECT CONNECT to read out on the receiver display.

It is all a matter of opinion and what your used to, as well as brand loyalty. I was never a big fan of Onkyo due to some issues I had years ago with a tape drive and older receiver.

My Opinion is Pioneer and your is Onkyo, so others that read this can compare and decide for themselves.

How does the video passthrough through HDMI on the Onkyo 705 look? Does it look as if my PS3 or HD cable box is directly connect to my HDTV via HDMI?

I have the 805 and I consider it a far better reciever than the Pioneer. You can buy the 805 and the iPod dock for way less than the Pioneer. So with that add-on it is very nearly the same, just with 3 HDMI ports. I prefer the sound of the Onkyo as well, the pioneer is too warm in the midrange.

All of the new Onkyo's (including the 705) have a 1080p pass-through on the HDMI ports. I had my PS3 hooked directly to the tv before I got my 805 and after I hooked the 805 up, it all looked exactly the same.

Before making a decision, I would recommend checking out the Yamaha RX-V1800 as well. It has 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master codecs, Burr Brown DACS with extended frequency range on all inputs, and 1080p upconversion from all sources.

It's built like a tank and offers an incredibly spacious warm sound. Here's a detailed review of it:
